Signer speaks to Richmond World Affairs Council
Mike Signer, an author and former Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, tonight discusses "the fight to save democracy" at the World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond.
Signer, an adjunct professor in Virginia Tech's master in International Affairs program, is the author of "Demagogue -- The Fight to Save Democracy from its Worst Enemies."
Signer is a supporter of President Barack Obama's foreign policy of engagement.
"Instead of a weapon in the hands of a bully, Obama sees democracy as a rallying cry for a natural leader leading a crowd away from a cliff," Signer wrote last week in an opinion article published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Tonight's event is at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
Signer, a University of Virginia law graduate, served as deputy counsel to Mark R. Warner during his term as governor. Warner is now one of Virginia's U.S. senators.
Last year Signer was senior strategist in the campaign of Democrat Tom Perriello, who defeated U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-5th, in November.

‘Engagement’—Like deciding not to put a missile defense shield in eastern Europe in order not to miff the Russkies? Like agreeing to 6-party talks with Iran that have proved so effective in North Korea? Yeah, we need engagement. We need to tell other countries what we are going to do in the name of OUR national security and let them accomodate to us rather than accomodating to them for their’s.
