Roanoke officers can’t use firing range

ROANOKE -- Roanoke County has terminated Roanoke law enforcement officers' use of a county-owned firing range and driver training facility, citing a disregard for safety.

The decision stems from a sniper training session in October in which an instructor positioned officers within 5 feet of a target while other officers fired live rounds from 50 yards away. Six police agencies participated in the exercise, which the instructor defended as standard practice.

Roanoke County and the city had shared the Dixie Caverns range and driving track for a decade. The city's last day at the facility was Tuesday.

Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson says city officers will use a Norfolk Southern shooting range.
