A man who had barricaded himself inside his Crenshaw Avenue apartment for about two hours surrendered to Richmond police early this evening.

The man, a Vietnam veteran, was taken to Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran's Medical Center on an emergency committment order, said police spokesman Gene Lepley.

Police were called to the man's home after neighbors reported that he was trashing his apartment. The man apparently had stopped taking his medication, Lepley said.

Authorities cordoned off several streets around the residence while they negotiated with the man to come out.
