UPDATE: Tornado warning canceled for Amelia County
The National Weather Service's Wakefield station has canceled a tornado warning for parts of Amelia County as a string of strong thunderstorms passes through the metropolitan Richmond area tonight.
The strong thunderstorm was moving northeast at 35 mph and could affect eastern Powhatan and western Chesterfield counties. It is forecast to pass over Midlothian Turnpike and Route 288 at 11:30 and reach Manakin and Tuckahoe north of the James River by 11:45 p.m.
The storms could bring wind gusts of up to 45 mph and brief, heavy rainfall. Ponding of water on roadways and flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas is also possible.
A tornado watch also remains in effect until 4 a.m. for central and southeastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina.
