10K walk raises $2,000 for Richmond history centers

The Anthem Stride Through Time, a 10K walk last weekend through Richmond, raised $2,000 on behalf of Richmond history.

Proceeds from the walk went toward The History Fund, which benefits Valentine Richmond History Center and Historic Richmond Foundation.

"We are still raising for it," said Mike McCormick, communications director for the Richmond Sports Backers, which set up the walk last Saturday. "Currently, we have approximately $2,000 raised."

William J. Martin, director of the Valentine, says the walk had benefits that can't be measured by money. It brought people into the history center who never might have seen it and pulled the diverse downtown historic attractions together, he said.

The history-centered walk drew about 2,200 participants who occasionally broke their stride to listen to re-enactors and storytellers. It began on Brown's Island, went through Church Hill and the state Capitol and looped through Jackson Ward before ending where it began.

My family participated in the walk.  While Richmond has it’s share of problems, our 2+ hours of walking through downtown reminded me of the many good things Richmond has to offer!  I hope they have the walk next year and I hope many more people decide to participate.  Thank you Sportsbackers!
