Benjamin Harrison bridge is closed

The Benjamin Harrison Bridge on state Routes 106/156 between Prince George and Charles City counties is currently closed and will remain closed through 9 p.m. today.

VDOT says the bridge is closed to allow crews to work on the counterweight for the bridge to operate smoothly. The bridge will remain closed to maritime traffic until further notice.

Motorists can use the following detours. These detours are approximately 28 miles one way. As a result, VDOT advises motorists to plan their route ahead of time and allow for a minimum 30-minute detour.

* Northbound on state Routes 106/156 -- Take state Route 10 west through Hopewell to Interstate 295 north to Route 5 (Exit 22) through Henrico County.

* Southbound on state Routes 106/156 -- Take state Route 5 west into Henrico County to Interstate 295 south to state Route 10 (Exit 15) east through Hopewell.
