Get ready to get cold.

After hitting the upper 50s this afternoon, the temperature is forecast to plunge into the mid-20s overnight as a cold front moves into the area.

The front is a key ingredient in a major snowstorm that could drop 4 to 9 inches of snow in the Richmond area and 5 to 10 inches in southern Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.

David Tolleris, a commercial forecaster in Chesterfield County, forecasts 8 to 12 inches for the Richmond region and 12 to 16 from southern Chesterfield to the North Carolina line.

The snow is expected to begin Friday afternoon or evening and continue into Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, the James River was falling today after nearly three days of flooding in Richmond.

The James crested Wednesday night at 15.9 feet at the city locks near Shockoe Bottom. Flood stage there is 8 feet. The river fell below 10 feet this afternoon.
