-- Former Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder doesn't have to worry about a freeze on his salary from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Wilder, who holds the title of distinguished professor, got a raise to $150,000 when he returned to VCU full time this month, even as the state portion of faculty salaries is capped by Virginia's budget crunch.
Wilder, who teaches in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, received a VCU salary of $50,000 while he was mayor and $100,000 before then.
He received $125,000 annually from the city while serving as mayor from 2005 through last month.
VCU Rector Thomas Rosenthal said yesterday that Wilder's new salary was negotiated in May, after the mayor decided he would not seek re-election.
"I can honestly say we were not aware of the depth of the problem" the university would face in the state budget crisis, Rosenthal said. But he said the salary is commensurate with Wilder's stature.
Rosenthal said he could not say whether the board of visitors would have acted differently in hindsight. VCU and other four-year colleges face state budget cuts of 15 percent.
Wilder's raise reflects an increase in responsibilities as a 12-month employee, VCU spokeswoman Pam Lepley said. She said the salary is entirely state-funded and does not include benefits.
"Distinguished professor" is an honorary title awarded by the board of visitors. VCU President Eugene P. Trani will hold the title when he retires at the end of June.
Lepley said there are seven distinguished professors who do not have their positions endowed. Of those seven, the average annualized salary is $170,828. She said there are 171 faculty members with salaries of $150,000 or more, which is 6.6 percent of the faculty. Most of them have benefits, she said.
Last year, Wilder taught one class, served as a guest lecturer in other classes, and had responsibilities for university development, Lepley said.
Now, he's responsible for teaching one class in the spring and one in the fall, serving as a guest lecturer, and overseeing the new L. Douglas Wilder Lectureship Series, Lepley said. The series kicked off last month with entertainer Bill Cosby, a longtime friend of Wilder.
Wilder also will pursue development opportunities for the Wilder School and its Center for Public Policy, as well as VCU's College of Humanities and Sciences.
Dan Ream, president of VCU's faculty senate, was cautious about reacting to Wilder's salary.
"I don't feel I have the whole picture of what we're getting for our money," he said.
But William E. Blake Jr., a professor emeritus of history at VCU, described himself as angry and disappointed.
"I really do think it's exorbitant," Blake said. "I really cannot see the justification in that kind of salary for the position."
The average salary of professors at VCU, excluding associate and assistant professors, is $112,745, according to the university. Some are nine-month employees, while others work year-round.
Wilder did not return a message left yesterday with his assistant.

WestEndGuy74, I believe we can disagree without being disagreeable. I interviewed Mr. Wilder more than 25 years ago on a local TV outlet, so I can appreciate a person with substance. Your contributions to life have likely also been significant and and perhaps appreciated by people who you do not know. Just keep living.
That amount of money, for someone merely flappin’ their chops at a podium—just a few times a semester at that—is waste that borders on criminal. I don’t care who it is either, or what the state of the economy is.
Miss V you really are showing your ignorance with that comment. True Clinton and Colin are paid for their speeches however that is typically not at the expense of tax payers. Maybe you should shell out the $150,000 a year for Wilder then we can end this discussion.
PS- I really do appreciate how you want to spend MY TAX dollars here in Richmond from your home in NC.
Bill Clinton and Colin Powell get $50,000+ for one speech. Mr. Wilder is only getting $150,000 for a year. Maybe if some of the detractors would take just a one hour noncredit course from him they’d too know how to walk with success!
VCU alums speak up! These scandals are further dragging your school down making it a joke. Seriously, wouldn’t you rather pay that money to an individual who is commited to improving your school and it’s image rather than someone who is solely interested in making his wallet fat!
Seriously, and to those who compare it to the Coaches pay #1) Coaches salaries are not paid by the state. #2) Coaches work more far more hours then Wilder will work so if you price it by hour the Coach will make less than Wilder #3) Coaches will make a far great impact on the lives of those they coach and touch than the 8 students Wilder chooses for 6 or so classes a semester.
Honestly, you should see how many classes Wilder actually holds per semester. I guarantee it will not run the whole semester and will most likely not require any reading and testing. It will be a class of random discussion and while that is part of the learning process it is should not be the only part.
Come on VCU Alums don’t let your degree be dragged down by this corruption at your school. I would be ashamed if this were my school.
A lot of you may not like the man but that does not detract from the FACT that Wilder is very experienced and has a wealth of knowledge. With that being said, I think that having Wilder at the cost of $150k is a ‘steal’. No one with VCU should be complaining. As for comparing Wilder to the Governor of Illinois, I would say that is like comparing George W. Bush with Clinton. A man of great moral fiber with a passion for his job, against a lying, cheating scumbag.
Wilder was already paid for those positions he held earlier in life. As far as being a former governor goes…Rod Blagojevich is about to become a former governor of Illinois. So what? Taxpayers are not obliged to throw oodles of money at former governors, just because they exist, for the rest of their lives.
I agree with Rayzor’s post on page 3. As well as Sonor’s post. This indvidual is a lawyer, former Gov., former mayor. How much does Anthony Grant, VCU’s basketball coach make? Six times what Wilder is commanding. Oh and less not forget Grant’s home & car allowance—-all on state funds for coaching a game! Let’s separate your personal opinion of the man from what he is being paid. Would Michael Morchower have accepted this same money? Whether we like it or not, he would be a draw to the Politic Science majors at VCU. I would sign up for his class in a heart beat just to learn from the former Governor of the state. Not someone that learned it from a book, but DID THE JOB! What former Gov. of any state could not command that type of salary. By the way, I am a VCU Alumni! The fact that it is in bad economic times is of no consequence. Perhaps, if we all had his creditials, (former Gov., former mayor, lawyer, etc) we would not only find a job but command the same salary. Heck, most lawyer’s make that without the other credentials. The fact that he got more to come back, good negotiating for him. Let’s cut the coaches salaries and perks and save space on RTD server.
,,is it any wonder no-one can afford college anymore,,ashame that they have gotton to be like WALL STREET !!
Unfortunately, this is another black eye for VCU: first was the Monroe degree scandal and now it’s Wilder salary scandal. If his salary was $100,000 for 1 class before mayor and it’s now $150,000 for 1 class, he got a 50% pay raise! In any economy, that’s disgusting! Granted, that may have been NEGOTIATED in May, that’s no excuse for this exhorbitant salary for 1 class. College professors would kill for this arrangement. Instead, most of them teach 2-4 classes for half that amount. I urge an all-out effort to stop this now. Just like his other cute tricks he’s done over the years like his car allowance “he didn’t know about” which netted him over $90,000. He’s laughing all the way to the bank.
