-- Former Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder doesn't have to worry about a freeze on his salary from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Wilder, who holds the title of distinguished professor, got a raise to $150,000 when he returned to VCU full time this month, even as the state portion of faculty salaries is capped by Virginia's budget crunch.
Wilder, who teaches in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, received a VCU salary of $50,000 while he was mayor and $100,000 before then.
He received $125,000 annually from the city while serving as mayor from 2005 through last month.
VCU Rector Thomas Rosenthal said yesterday that Wilder's new salary was negotiated in May, after the mayor decided he would not seek re-election.
"I can honestly say we were not aware of the depth of the problem" the university would face in the state budget crisis, Rosenthal said. But he said the salary is commensurate with Wilder's stature.
Rosenthal said he could not say whether the board of visitors would have acted differently in hindsight. VCU and other four-year colleges face state budget cuts of 15 percent.
Wilder's raise reflects an increase in responsibilities as a 12-month employee, VCU spokeswoman Pam Lepley said. She said the salary is entirely state-funded and does not include benefits.
"Distinguished professor" is an honorary title awarded by the board of visitors. VCU President Eugene P. Trani will hold the title when he retires at the end of June.
Lepley said there are seven distinguished professors who do not have their positions endowed. Of those seven, the average annualized salary is $170,828. She said there are 171 faculty members with salaries of $150,000 or more, which is 6.6 percent of the faculty. Most of them have benefits, she said.
Last year, Wilder taught one class, served as a guest lecturer in other classes, and had responsibilities for university development, Lepley said.
Now, he's responsible for teaching one class in the spring and one in the fall, serving as a guest lecturer, and overseeing the new L. Douglas Wilder Lectureship Series, Lepley said. The series kicked off last month with entertainer Bill Cosby, a longtime friend of Wilder.
Wilder also will pursue development opportunities for the Wilder School and its Center for Public Policy, as well as VCU's College of Humanities and Sciences.
Dan Ream, president of VCU's faculty senate, was cautious about reacting to Wilder's salary.
"I don't feel I have the whole picture of what we're getting for our money," he said.
But William E. Blake Jr., a professor emeritus of history at VCU, described himself as angry and disappointed.
"I really do think it's exorbitant," Blake said. "I really cannot see the justification in that kind of salary for the position."
The average salary of professors at VCU, excluding associate and assistant professors, is $112,745, according to the university. Some are nine-month employees, while others work year-round.
Wilder did not return a message left yesterday with his assistant.

I have a suggestion. Bring Illinois Governor Rod to Richmond and make him VCU president. He will enjoy more here in the company of former mayor. Probably he can give advance training in corruption to this VCU. This is just my personal opinion!!!!
Jesse James used a gun.
$150k a year is INSANE for a “professor” (and if you have sat in on one of his classes you’d understand why I use the term lightly) while other professors are not being brought back or are being let go. VCU has to cut back substancially and has cut EVERY single department (some more than others including criminal justice and political science which Wilder is a part of) yet they hire this man on for 150K a year to teach TWO classes, one in spring and one in fall and to have a few other duties? Are they serious? As for Wilder being hired for his “prestige”...exactly what WAS it? He’s the first “black” govenor? (Not really cause incase anyone hasn’t noticed he’s not fully black OR white, same as Obama). For all the good he did while Governor (please, take a look at Virginia) or for all the good he did as mayor of Richmond? (Helloooo, Richmond is in the crapper and he was involved in the whole Rodney Monroe thing). Come on Virginians….the reason this man is being idolized is not because of his accomplishments but because of his race which is about as half there as his politics. In this economy the American people, including Virginians, need to get past black and white and start seeing green. $150k is WAYYYY too much when we are in a recession and for Wilder to accept that kind of money when he is as rich as he is, shows just how much he cares about VCU, it’s students and Richmond. Can we keep on some of the REAL professors who care about their students??
It’s been about 4 years since I worked at VCU as staff - as I recall the median salary for a FULL Professor was about $65,000 - $75,000 a year. Administrators made over $100K. So…. Dougie is being paid Administrators’ wages. The poster who commented on the manner of “teaching” in his class is right on target. The same happened to me with an Ex-Commonwealth’s Attorney “Professor.“
All this is, is the GOOD OLE BOY system staying intact. “You scratch my back, I scratch yours.“ Dougie helps Trani gain real estate and Trani supports Dougie when he’s “ousted” as Mayor.
I could tell ya’ll stories about administrators who were caught using State employees to rennovate their homes - were kept on (yes, in the background and smaller pay, but still kept on until retirement.) Faculty who were accused of sexually harassing students who were given a “leave” for a year (still salaried) then returned to teach.
There’s all kinds of ways to take care of folks. I can’t speak about other universities, but VCU has always had their corruption - most is just never revealed.
He’s just another big, fat, rich pig at the trough and we’re feeding him with our hard-earned dollars. When are we going to say enough is enough?
I think it is unfair to compare Wilder’s salary to other educators at VCU. The school needs to tell the tax payers what we will get in return for the $150,000.00/year. Will he teach 1 class,2, 3, etc. What are the others educators giving for their similar pay.
Yes, Wilder was a Governor, Lawyer, and a Mayor, but that does not necessarily make him a good educator. How many times did he make decisions as Mayor that were later found by the AG to be illegal?
Will Wilder be teaching from books and a curriculum or from his own slanted home spun thinking of how the world should be in the not so wonderful world of Wilderville?
Plllllease!!!! What are Wilder’s accomplishments. His only real achievement is in being the first black Governor. The emphasis has always been put on the word black in that title by almost everyone. Give honor to where it is really deserved. To the people that have made a positive difference in the lives of others. There are so many people of color that are so much more worthy of praise that are and were in the past hard working, honest, dedicated and faithful. When I hear his name mentioned I automatically think negative thoughts. When I think about his being mayor I think of a dictatorship. He should be paying someone in the city of Richmond to teach a class on how not to behave in order to give back for what he cost everyone in the city to move the School Board. His true nature has been shown and it is not pretty.
VCU has dishonored itself and its alumni.
Money for nothing = Dire Straits
(Pun Intended)
Money for nothing. Money wasted.
A 20% raise?!?! Outrageous! I am a recent political science graduate of VCU, currently unemployed looking for work. I tried to take one of his classes. It was noting more than a fire side chat with old stories of what he accomplished and who he knows or has met. Nothing of substance. I dropped it. A 20% raise is a slap in the face to current faculty, staff and student workers who may or may not receive a raise this year or next. The state and VCU is swimming in the red ink and we give someone anyone a 20% raise for what? His name and reputation? That was lost during his last four years as mayor.
