Probe of Richmond sheriff to conclude shortly
The special prosecutor investigating an allegation of sexual battery made against Richmond's sheriff plans to complete the inquiry by early next week.
Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert also said yesterday that no charges have been placed in connection with the allegation against Sheriff C.T. Woody by one of his deputies.
Ebert declined to discuss the case further.
The investigation began after a woman who works for Woody came forward last month and alleged that the sheriff had forcibly kissed her and touched her inappropriately at the Richmond City Jail, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
The woman, who works at one of the city courthouses, alleges that the incident occurred about a year ago in Richmond, the source said.
Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Michael N. Herring requested that a special prosecutor be assigned to the case, and a judge selected Ebert to fill that role.
Woody denied wrongdoing Thursday night and again yesterday, releasing the following written statement:
"The fabricated allegation of sexual battery is totally baseless and without merit. I have faith in the criminal justice system. Until the investigation is concluded no additional comments will be made."
The woman who made the allegation, reached by phone yesterday, declined to comment and referred all questions to officials from the Sheriff's Office.
