A 12-year-old Maryland girl was killed this morning and her mother was critically injured in a single-vehicle wreck that closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 for hours south of Petersburg.

Shiane Dixon of Boyds, Md., died at the scene after she was thrown from the vehicle and was struck by a tractor-trailer, State Police said.

The girl was riding without a seat belt in the cargo area of a 2000 Lincoln Navigator that ran off the right side of the southbound interstate road about 4:39 a.m., State Police said. Shel was thrown into the northbound lane of the interstate after the driver overcorrected, struck the left guardrail, and overturned. She was struck by a truck that was traveling northbound.

The driver of the vehicle, Diane P. Nixon, of Boyds, Md., suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by a State Police Med-Flight helicopter to VCU Medical Center. She was wearing a seat belt.

Nixon’s 16-year-old son, Hassan, was partially ejected from the vehicle and taken to VCU Medical Center by ambulance with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. He was wearing a seat belt.

Two other passengers, Jordan Lusane, 18, and Taylor Scott, 12, were taken by ambulance to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Lusane also is a member of the Dixon family, and Scott is a family friend. Both were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The wreck closed the northbound lanes and one southbound lane of I-95 at Exit 45, where the highway crosses U.S. Route 301.

What a sad and tragic event that has happened and all people can do is ridicule and insult the families.  Please do not even sit at your computer and pretend like you have never either been in a car without your seat belt or been in the very back of an SUV or in the back of a truck, because I am sure you have at one point or another.  I know as a child during long road trips I use to sleep in the very back of my mothers Blazer, because of my motion sickness.  We do things in our everday life that could cause harm.  Leave this mother alone.  She will blame herself enough without having you fools blame her even more.

CKay,

I’m feel sad for her. But, this is a comment board. The truth hurts sometimes, but needs to be brought out in the open so that maybe some otherr parents learn their lesson. And the mother of the lost child could probably somewhere in her mourning heart agree, if these things arent talked about, other parents will do the same. Lets not sweep this lesson learning story under the rug, lets talk and discuss why it happened. And the bottom line is the child should have been wearing a seatbelt. And if you look around you’ve seen way too many children in other cars/truck/suv that arent strapped in. This is a sad sad situation, true. The family is already in my prayers. I hope the community will spread the word about how much this could have been avoided.

Please, instead of judging her mom let us mourn the loss of an incredible young lady. Our community (Clarksburg/Boyds) is grieving the loss of such an outstanding young lady. I have had the pleasure to know her and am deeply saddened at how quick everyone is to judge. We all know how to prevent tragedies. Unfortunately we have lost someone in this accident but let’s remember her life and not blame and cast judgment. I’m sure we have all made mistakes and done things that we regret but don’t always have to pay the ultimate price. Let’s just pray for the entire family and community. We have all lost an outstanding young lady.

Va Cons,

She’ll be paying for the rest of her life. I’m sad for her and the family. But, unless you’ve been living on another planet, people dont change their bad habits usually unless they know there’s a price to pay. Most think the ultimate bad price to pay (death) wont happen to them. So, they skate the laws and find out the hard way. My point was , and its sad it comes to this, maybe in a small way she needs to be made an example. If a parent thinks not only may me child get hurt (which seem to often doesnt deter) but also I may get jail time, fines, comm serv, blah blah blah, then that might be the extra nudge it looks like soooo many need. I dont want her to go through it. I dont kow her, and can only assume she is suffering. But, maybe to save the lives or just one more child at her expense would be worth it. Sorry, but its the world we live int.

Where are those that were protesting the Click-it or Ticket-it Law? This is why these laws enacted and obviously the law was ignored in this case. No one is to ride in the cargo area of a vehicle, EVER! Do people think that car makers put seat belts in the vehicles for decoration? This mother if she survives will live with great guilt for letting her little girl be in the cargo area.

Its sad, but apparently letting your child get severely hurt or even possibly killed isnt a huge enough deterent to make parents buckle up their children. Maybe these parents need to be charged so that others will think twice. I’m not saying give her jail time. She is miseable enough. But, maybe comm service, fines, couseling. I dont know. But something needs to happen , other than a $25 ticket, to make these parent think twice about their childs safety.

OMG, that is a horrible way to die! OMG! Obviously, the mother is grieving terribly right now & I am sure she feels horribly guilty. However, there are laws against letting children ride without a seatbelt & letting persons ride in cargo areas of vehicles if I am not mistaken & so IMO, she unfortunately needs to be charged for her daughters death. I know she obviously didnt mean for this to happen but as I understand it, everyone else was properly secured & survived the accident, if the little girl had been, maybe she would still be alive. Certainly, she wouldnt have been throw into the road to be run over by a tractor trailer! Ugh, makes my skin crawl with how sickeningly horrible that is!! RIP little angel

The article stated she was riding in the cargo area, which is probably why she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.  That early in the morning, she was probably sleeping, as were all the others.  Probably the driver also, since she ran off the road. Very sad. She probably should have been up front with her mother; that way, she would have been buckled in.
