All southbound lanes are now open on Interstate 95 at state Route 288 (Exit 62), the Virginia Department of Transportation reports. At one point, traffic was backed up for 12 miles.

Crews made temporary repairs to a concrete median damaged in a multi-vehicle wreck this afternoon near the exit, VDOT says.

State police say five vehicles, including one being towed, were involved in an accident that began Thursday at 2:13 p.m. when an auto driven by Jon Schmidt, 48, of Smithfield, rear-ended a flatbed tow truck hauling a car.

Schmidt told officials he fell asleep at the wheel, said State Police spokeswoman Deborah Cox.

Schmidt was charged with reckless driving and three people were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, Cox said.

All southbound lanes reopened two hours after the crash occurred, she said.

VDOT advises getting real-time traffic information by calling 511 or visit http://www.511virginia.org.
