Body of 16-year-old recovered from James River in Charles City County
The body of a 16-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming in the James River was discovered about 12:15 p.m. today, officials said.
A Chesterfield County dive team recovered the body near the area where the teen was swimming about 100 yards offshore. The body was found about 19 feet under water, said Michael Walizer, a Charles City County investigator.
The teenager, who was not identified, was swimming toward a fishing pier at Lawrence Lewis Jr. Park about 3:30 p.m. yesterday when he apparently became tired and went underwater, said Walizer.
The teen’s brother jumped into the water from the pier to help, but he could not save him, Walizer said.
The Chesterfield County team assisted Charles City deputies, Prince George County police and officials from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in the search near the park off state Route 5.
