—Saturday’s Richmond Symphony Masterworks concert, with concertmaster Karen Johnson in music by Roberto Sierra, Dvorak, Paganini and Stravinsky, has been canceled. Tickets will be honored at the 3 p.m. performance Sunday at Richmond CenterStage, 600 E. Grace St. The box office reopens at noon Sunday. For information, call (804) 788-1212.

—An author reading and signing scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled for next Friday. Margaret Edds will read from her new book, “Finding Sara: A Daughter’s Journey,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Richmond Public Library, 101 E. Franklin St.

—The third annual Ber’s Bowl originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday has been rescheduled for March 5-7 at ACAC Fitness and Wellness Center, 11621 Robious Road in Midlothian. The exercise class benefit is for 6-year-old Ber van der Meer, who has neuroblastoma, a rare cancer.

—WRIR Richmond Independent Radio’s 5th anniversary party is going on as planned through midnight tonight at the Renaissance Conference Center, 107 W. Broad St. on the Arts Walk.

—John Tyler Community College will be closed Saturday.

—All Richmond Public Libraries will be closed on Saturday.  Tonight’s Richmond Public Library’s First Friday gallery opening and author program at the Main Library has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 12.

—A Fair of the Heart, a Bon Secours Richmond and American Heart Association event originally planned for Feb. 6 has been rescheduled to Feb. 13 at the four area Macy’s department stores (Regency Square, Short Pump Town Center, Virginia Center Commons, Chesterfield Towne Center). Event hours on Feb. 13 are from 3-7 p.m.

— Virginia State University canceled classes as of 1 p.m. Administrative office will close at 2 p.m. Classes tomorrow are canceled.

— The Library of Virginia closed at 1 p.m. 

—Henrico County has postponed the Black History Month celebration originally planned for tomorrow at the Henrico Theater.

—Check the First Fridays blog for updates on galleries and artists.

—John Tyler Community College is closing at 2 p.m.

—Tomorrow night’s Richmond Forum program featuring David Plouffe, manager of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 8. For more information, call (804) 330-3993.

—The Hanover County Rabies Vaccination Clinic scheduled to be held tomorrow at the East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad has been cancelled.

—The Science Museum of Virginia is closing at 2 p.m. The RAMA show in the museum rotunda is closing at 6 p.m. The Virginia Aviation Museum is closing at 2 p.m.

As you mentioned, you knew the storm was coming!  So as a parent, you should have alternative plans already in effect just in case the schools decide to close.  Schools do not want to close unless they feel it will affect everyone’s safety…..so if it means they need to wait until the morning to decide, I do not see a problem with this!

Henrico county schools has a great information system that links important messages to the parents via e-mail, phone, or both. I was notified at 5:30 this morning that Henrico schools would be closed today.  I would suggest that the county shcool administration set a cut-off point for these notifications, especially closings, say by 10:00PM the previous evening.  Many parents don’t have the
time to prepare children for alternate activities and care on a closed school day with only 2 hours notice.  I know exceptions may occur in emergencies for a closing, but we have known about this storm for at least 3 days.  Make your decision that evening or leave the schools open.  Thanks.
