Arrests lead to fewer thefts from vehicles in the Fan, police say
Richmond police have arrested three men in connection with thefts from motor vehicles in the Fan. Since those arrests last month, such thefts in the Fan and nearby Randolph neighborhoods have decreased by 66 percent, police said.
From July 1 through July 19, when the third arrest was made, there were 22 thefts from motor vehicles in those neighborhoods. From July 20 through Sunday, there have been only seven.
Brent J. Reed, 50, of the 1900 block of Lakeview Avenue, was charged with theft from motor vehicle and drug possession. Richmond police officers Kelly Morley, Richard Kelly and Robert Yancey spotted Reed breaking into a vehicle on July 13 in the 200 block of North Robinson Street, police said. Reed ran, but was captured a short distance away.
Two days later, David R. Cole, 22, of no fixed address, was arrested in the 1800 block of Monument Avenue and was charged with tampering with an automobile, threatening bodily harm, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
Wayne K. Moore Jr., 19, of the 3500 block of Forest Haven Drive, has been charged with theft from a motor vehicle. Officers John Raina and Paul Sullivan arrested Moore on July 19 after a citizen saw Moore going in and out of several cars in the 2100 block of Maplewood Avenue.

Common…what are you not understanding. John Doe goes to jail. John Taxpayer has to pay for expenses involved in jailing. Maybe John Doe should do some work that will recoup some of the money spent the taxpayers. I’m not saying we would recoup all of the money…at least some money. Instead of sitting in prison lifting weights and watching tv.
Thats right dklee, the middle east is a shining example of how a real justice system should work. We should also stone women to death who dishonor their families by being assaulted by men other then their husbands.
hey Lex are you a cop?
mjrichmond, you make no sense at all…and by the way there’s cost for transporting them to the job, cost for deputies to stand there and make sure there doing there job and dont escape and cost when they claim they got injured from doing a job. Jail sometimes is the cheapest form of punishment.
i think we should do what they do in the middle east. you steal, you get your hands chopped off… no more stealing. saves us from putting you in prison.
GREAT work by the RPD…particularly by the officers involved. Now if we could JUST keep these guys in jail. I think it would be a great follow up story to see what the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the Courts do.
mark….that was just an example. Could be other less desirable work. Just a way to recoup all the $$$ for their internet, cable tv, housing, medical expenses, etc. Prisoners should be treated humanely by-all-means, but they should have to re-pay their, literal, debt to society somewhat.
Motley….I am happy they are caught, it is a win for us all. But a second win would be to save us money. With your philosophy why audit the police dept, we should be happy to have officers keep us safe, right?
I don’t know that you’d really want your roads repaired by convicts. Might not be the quality you expect. It would also put a lot of good hard-working people out of work.
You guys are the kind of folks who are given a free ice cream cone and then complain about it melting!
I’m glad the criminals are captured. A win for all us!
You couldn’t have said it any better…. Your more than right, but until the Government Officials realize that, this is how things are going to be.
