Woman gets 6 months for embezzling from hospital

A veteran hospital system employee and manager will serve almost as much time in jail as she did embezzling from the Bon Secours Richmond Health System.

Jeanne Miles Martin, 42, who had risen in 19 years of work to manager of the system's patient account refund department, was taken from a Henrico Circuit courtroom yesterday in handcuffs to serve a six-month jail sentence.

Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. suspended all but six months of a five-year prison sentence after hearing details of an embezzlement scheme that lasted seven months and resulted in a loss of $52,182.76.

"I'm deeply ashamed," Martin said, weeping almost uncontrollably. "I betrayed the trust of the employees I worked for."

She said she was overcome with medical problems within her family -- her husband's cancer and her parents' disabilities -- to the point of exhaustion.

Martin, from the 5600 block of Clairidge Road in Chesterfield County, said she had aspired to a career in law enforcement and felt she had failed herself and family in her most important undertakings.

"I've always done the right thing to help people. I'll do anything to make this right," she said.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Wood said the embezzlement effort extended from December 2007 through June 2008; Martin left the hospital system in August 2008, according to a spokeswoman.

"Instead of refunding patients, she was refunding herself," Wood said.

Martin approved refund checks made out to herself and family members, he said. Internal audits within the hospital system turned up the fraudulent withdrawals, according to the hospital system.

Harris ordered Martin to begin making restitution of at least $200 a month beginning six months after her release.

Let me start off by saying, Jeanne is my sister. She made a mistake, a BIG one. I have already written to the
reporter.
As far as “Bloving” goes, I wish I knew you, because we would be having a serious talk about right now. My
parents and siblings found about
all of this WEDNESDAY after she had been sentenced! How dare you (just like I told the reporter) implicate my
entire family. I wish I could sue him for slander or defamation of character. I think if they “needed” to, they
would have.Would have been a waste of time though. And when someone in your family bucks up, I “hope they
have to serve the whole sentence”.
She has never been in trouble in her life, ever. And don’t you worry about how she “was judge ordered” to pay it
back, that’s none of your business. And if you knew anything about Bankruptcy, she will not be able to. So I
hope you feel better and sleep better tonight since you have taken on the responsibility to pass judgement on a
woman you don’t even know.
Her husband nor her family knew anything about this until Wednesday, and if you’d like “the family”
investigated, you could meet me in person and I will give you all the answers you want.
I haven’t seen any checks, who they were written to or anything else! We didn’t know anything about anything!
Jeanne is one of the sweetest, most caring person in the world, my kids call her “Awesome Aunt Jeanne”
because we love her. Yes, she made a mistake, and yes she is paying for it. The judge made the decision of
her sentence, she has suspended time, she has lost so much over this that she has worked very hard for years
for, you have no idea.
Her family and husband are hurt and shocked, and then there’s you “Oh they need to investigate the whole
family” alii have to say is BRING IT.
My sister will get through this along with the love of her family. Anyone who knows Jeanne cannot believe this
has happened. So don’t judge my sister.
But the first step towards healing is forgiveness. But it doesn’t sound like you know too much about that, or
have ever done anything wrong in your life that you have regretted.
You are in no place to do so, remember what they say about glass houses.
My sister AND my family will be fine, so just dont you go worrying about us.

I think that that the punishment was appropriate.  You can’t hang someone for their first offense the judicial system doesn’t work like that.  $200/month will never get paid off but atleaset she has to try.

I think it is sad that all she gets is 6 months.  She has stolen that money from clients of Bone Secours.  I don’t care if there is a retirement there or not, that is no excuse to do that.  Her husband’s cancer and parents illness are no reason to go stealing $52,000.00 from anyone.  I wonder if they have investigated her family too, if checks were written out to them as well—I am sure her husband was involved in this scam as well.  Has anythign been done to him??  I think she should have to serve all five years.. What is $200.00 a month after she gets out.  All she has to do it take bankruptcy and then she is free and clear—five years sounds a lot better to me

mwa3c-  Don’t get me wrong BSR is a good place to work and does have great health care but the long term benefits of retiring are slim there is no match on the 403B plan and the vesting retirement is almost NOTHING!! But the values that the organization has is great.  It gives great care to those in need. They also treat their employees very well.  That is why this story is crazy… The building that she worked in is a very relaxed building.  Also, she worked under an awesome Director.  He takes care of business but he is good to his employees.  :) Jeanne was just a fool to do this.  As many programs as BSR has for employee’s with financial troubles, believe me there are other options.

So, essentially she was setting up her own retirement program :-) Sorry to hear they don’t support their employees as far as retirement goes!!

Now it all makes sense! She should have gotten off with just a slap on the hand!

to mwa3c as a BSR employee I doubt she had any retirement funds from BSR… LOL this isn’t the place to retire from… I personally know Jeanne and just can’t believe it… She played it well, lets just say that.  :)

I mis-read this, she is not a federal employee.. i saw “veterin hospital employee” and thought V.A. hospita…
I still would like to see where her retirement is stripped.. 19 years as an employee, i am sure she has money put away.

I would like to read in this article where any of her federal retirement money is jerked away, any years of services nullified.
