A former employee of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System will serve five years in prison for embezzling $782,600.

Charlotte Scott, 47, pleaded guilty in December to seven felony counts of embezzlement. Authorities say she used VCU funds to buy GRTC Transit System tickets and resell them at lower prices for her own profit.

Richmond Circuit Judge Bradley B. Cavedo yesterday sentenced Scott to 70 years in prison, with all but five years suspended.

An insurance company has paid $654,000 to VCU, said Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney John S. Jung. Scott was ordered to pay the additional $128,600 in restitution.

Scott worked as a grants specialist in the health system from 1999 until she was fired in March 2008. Jung said Scott cooperated with police and admitted the theft. -- Reed Williams

I am pretty sure it’s “love of money” that is the “root of all evil” not so much money per se.
