Hanover teens face explosives counts

Two Hanover County teens have been charged with making plastic-bottle bombs that exploded the evening of Sept. 11 outside two Mechanicsville-area high schools.

The teens, 15 and 16, each were charged with two counts of manufacturing, possessing and using explosive materials and one county of conspiracy in separate incidents that occurred at Lee-Davis High School and Hanover High School during junior varsity football games, according to the Hanover Sheriff's Office.

No one was hurt or in immediate danger in either incident. Authorities described the incidents as pranks but emphasized that someone could have been hurt.

Information from residents and support from school officials helped lead to the arrests, the sheriff's office said in a statement. -- Mark Bowes
