Woman is cleared of Henrico charges

A person of interest in the brutal New Year's Eve slaying of a Henrico County woman last year was released from jail yesterday.

Kayla C. Armstrong, 25, wrapped herself in her mother's arms and smiled as well-wishers walked her from the Henrico jail yesterday evening, two hours after a judge found her not guilty of multiple charges linked to an attack on Keiona Cecilia Tiree Braxton.

"It was the support of my mother, my daughter and all these friends," she said when asked about remaining behind bars with no bond since her arrest in January on assault, burglary and vandalism charges.

She declined to comment about the slaying of Braxton, 26, a longtime rival.

No charges have been brought in Braxton's death at her apartment, a fiery, bloody scene littered with burned Christmas wrapping paper and shell casings.

Braxton, who was three months pregnant and living with the father of Armstrong's 4-year-old daughter, apparently was shot, stabbed and left to die in a fire.

The apartment in the 5700 block of Crenshaw Road off Chamberlayne Avenue was the same place where authorities said Armstrong -- four days before the slaying -- broke into, assaulted Braxton and damaged her former boyfriend's car.

But defense attorney Dennis Martin won acquittals of all charges yesterday in a bench trial before Circuit Judge Burnett Miller III.

He argued that there was conflicting evidence about whether Armstrong entered the apartment the night of Dec. 27 or had damaged former boyfriend Kenneth Lee's car.

Armstong's mother, Jackie Advani, testified that it was she who entered the apartment to retrieve her visiting granddaughter only to find Armstrong and Braxton fighting outside the home as she left the apartment with the baby.

Lee, the young girl's father and apparently the father of Braxton's unborn child, testified that Armstrong entered the home, coming through a closed front door, after her mother had entered the apartment first. A fight quickly ensued, he said.

Lee said he saw Armstrong twice kick his car outside the apartment, but Advani testified she heard someone else admit to the damage.

Lee and Braxton took out protective orders against Armstrong after the Dec. 27 incident, but court records indicate that they weren't served until after Braxton's death.

Armstrong was arrested on the assault, breaking and entering, and vandalism charges three days before Braxton's funeral.

The two had engaged in a long-running feud, apparently over Lee, and Armstrong was convicted of unlawful wounding in 2006 after she stabbed Braxton. In November 2007, Braxton wrote in a complaint filed in court documents that Armstrong "was going to kill me."

Prosecutors have declined to comment on the status of the murder investigation, but Martin, until yesterday, had repeatedly pleaded for Armstrong's release.

The defense attorney has said that Armstrong has denied being at the apartment the day of the slaying.

Where is the justice for Keiona? The justice system has failed her yet again. Armstrong is guilty and she knows it and play the innocent card all she wants but she is not fooling those who love Keiona. She is able to walk around free while she committed murder and Keiona will never be able to again how is that right? Come on her history with Keiona shows she is guilty even if there is no evidence putting her there all that means is it was pre meditated and well thought out before hand. No one in the world has as much hate and rage for Keiona as Armstrong. I have seen people convicted on less.

Ok,now I feel I have to play devils advocate here. What happened to Ms Braxton was a great tragedy and whomever the animal was that committed this crime should burn…...But are we sure we are condeming the right person?

There is alot of history between the two ladies and truly it is all centered around the “boy” in their lives. This “boy” played these 2 women against each other for years. When one didn’t act right, he ran to the other…. So many details in that trouble triangle are not made known to the public. It wasn’t mentioned that the “boy” was sleeping back and forth with both women (which doesn’t excuse either of them because they both knew what he was doing)... He was with Ms Armstrong less than a WEEK before this TRAGEDY….

I agree with the feelings of Ms Braxtons anger because this was a sensless crime and because of the past between these women, the easiest answer is to blame Ms Armstrong…. This family will never have peace whether Ms Armstrong is found guilty or if someone else is found to be the culprit. We need to pray for this family to somehow find peace and for them to allow the almighty to punish that person or persons that are responsible for what happened to their loved one.

I think we need to just let the police and investigators do their job and find the person that is responsible. I am again in no way saying that Ms Armstrong is not the culprit, but she has been slandered and dragged through the mud on the internet and on television.

What will happen if it comes out that she wasn’t the person at all that committed this crime, will anyones opinion of her change? Probably not because we have turned into a society that tends to believe everything thing we see. I was told as a child don’t believe anything you here or half of what you see….... This is a big mess and 2 women have lost theirs lives because of this tragedy. Unfortunately, only one has the ability to try and start over…

Again, if Ms Armstrong did it then she will reap what she has sown but if she wasn’t the animal who committed this crime will she ever get her life back….

I agree Tom
If a man has kicked you to the curb why on earth would you want to be with someone that doesnt want you back?
Get a life already, For you’re daughter sake of growing up with a mom Ms. Armstrong I hope you didnt committ such a gross and nasty crime, But if you did then the daughter is better off without you and God will even the score!
How on earth can you sleep at night?
