A Richmond economic development official has been charged with cocaine possession.

C. Cary Brown, 45, of the 600 block of West Franklin St., was arrested Nov. 13 after a Nov. 4 traffic stop at Leigh and Lombardy streets by Virginia Commonwealth University police.

In records filed in Richmond Circuit Court, a VCU police officer said a search of the vehicle revealed a pack of cigarettes under the driver's seat. Inside the pack were six individually packaged white rock substances that were later confirmed as 0.755 gram of cocaine, according to court records.

According to the officer, Brown acknowledged a drug problem and said he paid $60 for the substances. Brown said he had been buying drugs in the Newtowne area for a year, spending $400 per month, according to court records.

Brown is listed in the city's employee directory as a programs administrator in the Department of Economic Development.

In February 2007, Mayor L. Douglas Wilder named Brown interim director of economic development, before the appointment of Carthan F. Currin III as director that July. Brown has worked for the city since 1996.

Brown and attorney Angela Whitley did not return calls yesterday. City spokesman Michael Wallace declined to comment, citing personnel matters. Brown is scheduled for a Jan. 20 court hearing.

instead of bashing regardless of who you are obviously you do not understand addiction it is a disease lets show a little more compassion here, beside at least 1 person in every family is addicted to something addiction does not discriminate. I hope he gets the help he needs.

As is the case with most stories and most people, life and those who live it are more complex than most would care to admit. I’ve always felt that the sum of one’s actions are greater than one’s transgression.
Cary Brown was of great assistance to us at Crossroads Coffee in its infancy, through his office at Econ. Development. We would not have gotten off the ground without him and his office.
His supporters are numerous, both within and out of our shop.

Newtowne??? He was going there to buy his crack? Public money wasted. He should’ve gotten it from the HP Boyz on 4th Avenue. They’ve got better stuff there.

You wouldn’t know it by reading this article, but C. Cary Brown is a freaking crack head like every other crack head in this city.  Why was he charged 9 days later?  Did they actually wait for a lab to verify the substance before he was arrested?  Why wasn’t he treated like the crack head that he is? Every day I become more and more convinced that the TD is on the take!
