A cab driver was shot in Prince George County early yesterday by two customers who took his cab after pushing him from the vehicle, authorities said.

The cab driver, who was not identified, survived the attack and was able to run back to a service station where he had picked up the pair, said Prince George police Lt. Brian Kei. The driver was initially taken to Southside Regional Medical Center and then transferred to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the back of his neck, Kei said.

Police said a driver for Boulevard Cab Co. in Petersburg was dispatched about 2:10 a.m. to pick up two men at U.S. Gas in the 16000 block of Prince George Drive. At one point while driving, the cab driver heard a shot and stopped the vehicle. The two customers then pushed him from the car and drove off.

The wounded driver ran back to the service station for help. Police recovered the stolen cab in the 18000 block of South Crater Road in Prince George. Kei said the assailants apparently didn't get any money.
