State police say surveillance photos show the suspect likely left the scene and immediately purchased items with the victim’s debit card at the Exxon Mobil, 24279 Rogers Clark Boulevard in Ruther Glen.
Someone stole a laptop and other items from a woman's car after the woman stopped on Interstate 95 in Caroline County on Sunday to help out at a car crash, police said yesterday.
"The Virginia State Police find this particular crime especially disturbing," Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Tom Cunningham said.
The 20-year-old Stafford County woman parked on the shoulder along I-95 between the Ladysmith and Thornburg exits to check on a Rhode Island couple who had wrecked, Cunningham said.
The couple's vehicle had turned over several times and landed off the right side of the road. The man and woman were hospitalized with injuries described as not life-threatening.
As the Stafford woman was checking on the couple, a man went into her car and stole her laptop and a wallet that contained cash; identification cards; and debit, credit and department store cards, Cunningham said.
The woman reported the thefts to state police.
The woman's debit card was used later to buy items at a gas station in Ruther Glen. Police have released surveillance photos of the man, who has a medium build, short hair and a goatee.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call state police at (804) 553-3445 or (800) 552-9965.

What an S.O.B.!!! If and when the police catch him, I sure hope the judge or jury drops him under the prison. It is knuckleheads like him who make it difficult for good people to trust others. Kudos to the young lady who helped!!
I am curious what this SOB purchased. Probably some beer and some smokes.
Reminds me of a song by Petula Clark, “It’s a sign of the times”.
...and we wonder why no one wants to become involved!
Accolades to this young lady who wanted to help others. It’s a shame you fell victim as well. It’s a pretty good picture of the “JERK” and I hope they catch him soon. Thank you young miss for your kindness…not everyone is like this man.
