An unarmed, on-duty security guard found dead today in an apartment complex near Chippenham Parkway and Ironbridge Road was killed by a blow to the head, the state medical examimer said this afternoon. The guard worked for American Security Group, police said.
The body of Damion L. West, 28, of the 6400 block of Lovey Road in Richmond was discovered shortly after 4 a.m. near a retention pond at the Ivy Walk Apartments in the 4800 block of Burnt Oak Drive, near the southwestern tip of Falling Creek, police said. West was found after officers first discovered his abandoned, marked security vehicle.
Police said West had been working as a security guard last night at the complex. He died of blunt force trauma to the head, said a spokesman for the state medical examiner’s office.
Authorities were originally called to the scene shortly after 4:15 a.m. for a report of an auto accident, but they found “an unattended vehicle that was up against a wood line,” said Chesterfield police Capt. Kevin Smith said. “Wrecked would not describe it. It was not wrecked.”
“We believe the circumstances are suspicious,” Smith added.
Police are investigating his death as a homicide.
While forensics crews and a representative of the medical examiner’s office worked at the scene, they closed off Burnt Oak Drive, the only road leading into and out of the apartment complex.

WHO CARES!!!! if this place is in Chesterfield or Richmond, Somebody was MURDERED, a hard working young man with the world in front of him. He is no differant than a police officer or firefighter, (I’ve been both for over 25 years) he gave his life protecting others. Please think of his family and coworkers in their time of need.
Remember earlier this week that Chesterfield Co. was bragging about no homicides this year? Well, that has been shattered. Crime is EVERYWHERE—city or county, nowhere is immune. I knew it was just a matter of time. BTW, what about that poor soul who was killed by the C’filed police earlier this year? Doesn’t that count? A life was lost here, too.
Crime is everywhere, so be prepared for the unthinkable, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t set yourself up to be a target.
My sincerest sympathies to the family.
Prayers go out to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life just doing his job.
Richmond City is all what you make it everybody need to stop these negative comment you can live out in the county crime can happen anywhere.
Okay, that was the problem, new management! Does it every time! LOL. Oh well, I guess I really will have to move into the deep county if I want to live safe and sound….
i agree lovin, when they first opened they were very nice. However, when I googled the apartments not too long ago, the reviews that were posted from residents and neighbors were atrocious. Not a place I would recommend anyone to stay, and now with this, it just makes it worse. But I do agree to a certain extent, you would look for these apartments to be a little different, but when the new management took over, they went downhill.
sickofstupid, you are right, it doesn’t matter where it is, but my point is, I used to want to live there because I thought it was different from all the other apartments around Southside and it ended up being just as bad though it looked good on the outside and in….I know nowhere is immune from crime but I figured this place would be different….
doesn’t matter where it is ‘lovin’. Crime happens everywhere. Its more prevalent in the City, but no matter how close Ivy Walk is to the city, it is still Chesterfield County, and they are not immune from crime.
its definately chesterfield…but very close to the city line. scary story! too close to home…
To be technical it is in the county, but it’s over southside, which is what I should have said and further more, it is not far from being in Richmond City. Really, its my side of town and that is how I see it…
