Two small dogs stolen from an Amelia County couple whose home was ransacked by burglars were found today about a block away.
John Puryear said he was informed by the sheriff’s department after a neighbor saw the dogs that met the description of Nikki, a 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier, and Indy, a 7-year-old Maltese.
“They’re cold and freezing, but we have them now,“ said Puryear.
The Puryears, who have grown children, said the dogs are like family.
Puryear speculated that the dogs, which weigh about 4 pounds each, had been driven back to the neighborhood and dropped off because they were not dirty nor otherwise appeared to have been outdoors very long.
Meantime, the search continued for suspects in the breakin at the home where a television and jewelry valued at about $10,000 were stolen by burglars who took the dogs and their toys and treats, as well as an array of routine household products and prescriptions for high blood pressure and migraines.
“I don’t believe there was a drawer that wasn’t opened,“ said Amelia County Sheriff’s Deputy John Pollock.
Pollock said investigators obtained several sets of fingerprints from the scene. Authorities have not immediately identified any suspects, he said.
The dogs are indoor pets and likely started barking when the robbers came in, said Tina Puryear.
Puryear said she became suspicious yesterday when she called home to check phone messages and couldn’t get through. When she came home, she found that the telephone lines had been disconnected from the outside.

So happy to hear you have your dogs back!! You have lived my worst fear which is to have someone break into my house and harm/take my dogs. You can take/destroy anything in my home…just leave the dogs alone. After reading this story I am going to install a Internet camera in my home that is kicked off by motion (the dogs are crated so they will not active the camera)This way I will get an email\text when the camera goes off and starts recording
It’s really awesome to see that smile on the owners face, when we read some many bad stories it’s a sweet change to read a good ending
Congrats on having you’re babies home
I am SO happy the pups have been found. My beagle is the closest thing i have to a child and i just cant imagine something happening to him. such a happy ending to this crazy story. glad all is well :)
Hello Virginia, Our babies have been Found!!! I want to sincerely THANK-EVERYONE for their out-pouring of support!! We are so grateful to our daughters, family and friends who got the word out of our stolen pets. We are so glad to have our little girls back home where they belong..
The Puryears -
It is TERRIFIC that those 2 cute little dogs are back home!!I hope these thieves get caught!
A bright ray of light on a dismal day. Glad the little girls are safe and sound.
A german shepard is a great choice for a companion. Over the years I’ve had a couple of labs that were very protective of their momma and surroundings.
I guess the punks knew people would be looking for these dogs? It is a shame they left them out in the rain and the cold, but at least they are home safe now.
German Shepherd sounds like a good idea…trained to hurt intruders.
I’m so glad the dogs are safe and sound. I think you need to get them a new friend for their troubles. A cute little german shepherd, trained to maul the next burglar that breaks in!
Im so happy she got her dogs back, at least they had a heart to set them free…!!
