Fan resident robbed at gunpoint

» 23 Comments | Post a Comment

A man was robbed at gunpoint in an alley behind his Fan District home last night.

The man told Richmond police he was getting out of his car behind his home in the 1600 block of West Grace Street when he was confronted by two suspects, one of whom had a gun.

The suspects instructed him to put his wallet in a bag they were carrying, and when he complied, they ran.

The victim, who was not injured, told police the robbery happened so fast that he was unable to get a good description of the suspects.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (804) 780-1000.

Squier13,

Perhaps I should have chosen better words, because I am certainly not blaming students who are victims of crime here in Richmond.  You seem to be familiar with the area therefore more precautious and aware of your surroundings. That is fine and well—I am too and am aware of what occurs hre in Richmond, therefore more vigilant myself.  What gets me riled up is the acceptance by people in Richmond that it just is a way of life that one should get used to when it does not have to be.  Counties like Henrico and Chesterfield experience far more traffic of people during the evening hours and on the weekend, yet the number of violent crimes that occur in those jurisdictions pale in comparison to what we are getting here in Richmond.  Sometimes it seems as if Richmond has a big “Welcome Criminals” mat at its entrances…

I don’t understand why thugs running the streets of Richmond is seen as just “reality” because we happen to live in the city. This is the capital of the state, I would expect our standards to be higher. I can recall going to school in Williamsburg and it being a wonderful experience. I did not have to fret about where I parked my car, about getting back home before it became too dark outside, having to walk with a group of friends at all times, etc.  I feel that we should want the same thing here in Richmond and it starts with not tolerating a lax approach towards criminals—which means demanding more info from police reports, more police patrol—not unmanned cars parked in neighborhoods and demanding harsher sentences for those found guilty of crime.

Wow.  The Fan is getting so dangerous that even the robbers know to go out in pairs!?!

“As for blaming the victim… you should be careful..“

don’t sweat it he blamed students for getting robbed on page 1.  yes in a perfect world we could all walk down dark alleys unmolested while listening to our ipods and holding a wad of cash but that’s not the real world.  you are doing the right thing by avoiding the alleys at night and making yourself less of a potential target.

GOPer, apparently you do not understand my original comment either.  I’m not speaking to crime statistics or the general racial make up of the “usual suspects”.  I think we all know that in Richmond, by and large, young black males are committing most violent crimes.  What I was saying is how will the paper printing “black male” help anyone catch these two specific males?  It’s so generic.  Without something like the clothing they were wearing, a distinguishing facial feature, tattoo, scar, etc they could be two of thousands.  It would be a better report if there was more information than just race or gender to help narrow the field.

As for blaming the victim… you should be careful when making assumptions from other’s words, you know what they say about assuming….  I was in no way blaming the victim, the man was at his own house parking his car, trying to go home and did not deserve what happened to him.  I was simply saying, that for myself, I feel more comfortable parking out front, as a precaution. I have a really dark alley behind my house with plenty of places for someone to wait to pounce.  Personally, I don’t want to take my chances, so I eliminate the issue by parking at the well-lit curb.

Now for koryo… I do pay attention, but perhaps you don’t.  I was speaking of police patrol AT NIGHT.  I have and frequently see police ride up and down my block nightly.  Granted, most are in cars as I stated before, but I see plenty of bikers around until it really gets dark.  Of course police on foot or bike are more nimble and maneuverable than in a car, but in pitch black, the lights attached to the car certainly help to identify themselves and make their presence know, plus the glow from those headlights and the spotlight are much brighter than a flashlight… an element that’s going to be necessary late at night.

Hey me too,

if you paid attention while living in the fan, you would know we have had several armed robberies in the last several months. In fact, a woman was shot in the leg on strawberry. So having the police riding around in daylight hours is not accomplishing the goal of stopping these desperate creatures.  We have already had one person wounded, what will it take before the police take this matter in hand and start night foot patrols or has been suggested in another post: setting up an undercover operation.

Whether or not the paper wants to report the story, the holidays are approaching fast…people are desperate due to a vast number of problems that makes these kinds of crime increase rapidly!

No one wants to disappoint their love ones at HOLIDAY TIME!  They are driven to rob, pillage, and plunder with no regard to what is right, who gets hurt, or the physical or property damage they cause….

WHEN WILL SOCIETY REALIZE THE DETRIMENT OF ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS because when people who live like “caged animals” dependent on their every need discover due to the economy or LACK of donations that their every need is not going to being met—-THEY START ROAMING THE STREETS!

Considering this is going to be ONE the most ‘FINANCIALLY TRYING” holiday season we as a nation WILL HAVE TO experience in quite a few years…ALL I CAN SAY….IS BE CAREFUL!

Also MeToo,

It is interesting that you are in a sense blaming the victim.  In a civilized society, one should not have to alter their lifestyle (parking in an alley near your home vs. parking on the street) because of a small minority of those who believe that they are above the law therefore can inflict harm upon others.

In addition, police presence at night—when it is most needed—can make a heck of a difference.
