Hermitage student accused of sl apping vice principal faces assa ult count

A Hermitage High School student was charged with assaulting a vice principal at the school on Wednesday, police said.

Jessie Lynn Shelton, 18, of the 10100 block of Flanders Road was arrested after he allegedly slapped the school administrator around 11 a.m., said Henrico County police spokesman Lt. Doug Perry.

The assistant principal for seniors was signing in students for an assembly when Shelton walked by and struck her in the face for no apparent reason, police said.

"He told the officer he had just been transferred there from Lee-Davis High School [in Mechanicsville], was not happy there and thought it was the quickest way to get kicked out of school," Perry said.

The assistant principal's injuries did not require medical treatment, Perry said.

Assaulting a teacher, principal, assistant principal or guidance counselor on duty at a public school is a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by a sentence of 15 days in jail, two days of which shall be a mandatory minimum term of confinement, according to state law.

Believe me, I get tired of no compassion for school personnel too; I am a high school teacher. I know this student personally and there are many variables unknown to the public. I’m just saying we should reserve judgement unless ALL of the facts are known.

Waw, waw waw! The first lesson anyone must learn: conduct has consequences! Whether LD or not, conduct has consequences. Good choices bring good outcomes. I get tired of all the compassion for the bully / acting out kids and none for the principles, teachers and classmates who have to endure their boorish behavior.

What this article failed to mention is that this is a special education student who lost both his step-father and mother within 3 weeks of each other in the past few months. He was then taken from LDHS where he has attended since he was in ninth grade and sent to Hermitage, taking away what he had left of security and normalcy. Perhaps we should be offering this student some compassion, support and encouragement.
