Richmond police identify Gilpin Court shooting victim as Randy W. Crawford
Richmond police yesterday identified Randy W. Crawford, 44, as the man shot to death Friday in the Gilpin Court public-housing development.
Police received a call reporting shots fired in the 100 block of West Federal Street about 6:45 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a man shot on the front porch of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Crawford lived in the 2900 block of Peabody Lane.
Victims advocate Alicia Rasin said she is a friend of Crawford's mother. Rasin said the victim, a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, was an only child. He recently worked as a food-service cook for Virginia Commonwealth University and did janitorial work, she said.
"He had never been in any trouble. He was an easygoing person, willing to help anybody," Rasin said.
Rasin said Crawford had friends in Gilpin Court whom he would visit. She said Crawford's survivors include a 7-year-old daughter.
"His mother is hoping someone will come forward with information," Rasin said.
Detectives are working to establish a motive. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000. -- Melodie N. Martin
