A 25-year-old Richmond man was shot in a home invasion late last night, city police say today.

Michael Dennis and his girlfriend were sleeping when they heard someone break into their residence in the 5700 block of Berrywood Road in South Richmond about 11:25 p.m., Capt. Linda Samuel said.

The suspect opened the bedroom door and fired, striking Dennis in the lower back.

Dennis was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Samuel said the couple was not able to identify the suspect. The attack remains under investigation.

Sounds more like the burlar committed the crime to shoot the boyfriend and not rob or steal. Maybe an ex- did not like the boyfriend’s sleeping arrangements.

I’m sorry to hear we’ve had yet another home invasion.  Unfortunately, what you have to realize is 30 years ago most burglars just broke in to steal a few items and then left.  They really had no intent to harm.  Now, between drugs, domestics and mental illness it is a much more dangerous environment we live in and criminals are frequently drugged or seriously mentally ill and could care less if they kill you or not - to them it is icing on their cake of life.  I do recommend keeping a weapon in your house if you are sound of mind, properly trained and willing to defend yourself.  Too many people think they will have time to call the police and have the police appear magically in the snap of a finger.  There are too many miles between you, too many of you and too many criminals for the handful of law enforcement to be able to do that.  That is the simple truth.

Dave Carrington: Thanks so much for the info for Door Security Pro.  I will definitely check the site out.  I would like to think that my house is reasonably secure but I am old enough to know that there are no guantees, period.
There is a certain amount of comfort in sleeping near ‘Charter Arms’, Air Taser and a dog with an atittude.  I have to undergo background checks on both weapons.  My late father and brothers taught me how to show a 22 rifle and shotgun when I was about 12 years old.  That shotgun knocked me on by behind.  The only thing that was hurt was my shoulder and pride.
I pray to God that I will never have to point a loaded weapon at anyone, but if it is my life or someone else I will not hesitate for split second.  Hesitation can make you dead.  Blessing and all of you stay safe.

With all the laws on the books. I bet this criminal was really scared to break into the house. Maybe they could pass some more laws that criminals do no obey. Do you think the criminal waited 30 days to get the gun he used and went through a background check? I hope the victim will have a full recovery and the criminal caught.

And what about the people who think we should not be allowed to have firearms?  Case in point—this guy could possibly have protected himself had he had access to a weapon.

Well he better think real hard about whatever he has done to someone or why would someone want him dead. People don’t just break into your house to shoot you and if so why was his girlfriend not shot…. THINK!!!!!!!!!
Because the shooter is still on the loose…

Back in the late 80s…  I was outside in the backyard cooking on the grill.  I had the front door unlock as I lived in a good neighborhood.

Anyway, the next day when I was looking for my wallet and other personal items… I searched for a couple of hours.  When I finally realized that someone had come into the house while I was outside cooking. They had ran through the house and took the items they wanted.  This included my camera case, wallet, bottles of wine.

10 days later a school nearby called to let me know that they found my wallet with only the ID in it.  My camera and credit cards along with the money in the wallet were gone.  I didn’t care about the wine as it was cheap wine from Trader Joe’s.

Nowadays… you haveto make sure your door is locked if you are not going to be inside for a while….  The criminals today are very brazing in what they want to do.

I like truthmachine’s answer, you can best believe I will shoot first, ask questions later if you break into my house!

You could do like that guy with the Samurai sword, and take a whack at ‘em.

In truth, weirdest thing I’ve read about being used against a home invasion? A fire extinguisher.

The home owner just laid down a thick spray, and they couldn’t stand on the hard wood floor.

truth machine, here is one better, 12 gauge double barrel, one barrel with #4 buckshot, the other barrel with #4 rabbit shot. Fire both barrels at the same time. Granted the clean up will take a little more time but you don’t have to worry about penetration into another apartment or dwelling. Will most assuredly mess up the bad guy’s day.
