Man sought in daylight robbery of 76-year-old woman
Richmond police were searching today for a suspect in yesterday afternoon's beating and robbery of a 76-year-old woman in the parking lot of a Shockoe Bottom grocery store.
Capt. Scott Booth said the woman was treated at VCU Medical Center for a head laceration after yesterday's 3:10 p.m. attack in the front lot of the Market at Tobacco Row.
Based on information from witnesses and evidence later recovered by police, authorities developed what police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh this afternoon called "a strong suspect in this case. We're interviewing witnesses and following all leads, and the investigation is ongoing."
Booth said the woman had just finished shopping for groceries at the store in the 2300 block of East Main Street and was walking to her car when a man approached and demanded her purse.
When the woman resisted, a brief struggle followed and the woman was struck on the head with a hard object, Booth said, adding that the suspect ran to a car and drove from the scene.
Based on information from witnesses at the store, police found what they believed to be the getaway vehicle and the suspect, and they began a short pursuit, but officers quickly cut it off because of concerns about speed.
Booth said the vehicle used in the pursuit was recovered later yesterday, as was the woman's purse.

Rob99,
I have always felt very safe in the downtown district of Richmond, other parts of the City are not safe at all however and I think much of the crime in those parts goes unreported. The problem I had with this particular crime however, has nothing to do with race, in fact, the article does not say what race the victim or the suspect are. My problem was that 1) the robbery and beating was of a 76 year old woman. & 2) The crime took place in broad daylight and apparently no one came to her rescue.
It was a purse snatching, not the end of Western Civilization. I can’t imagine that the hysterical responses that I read on here to every petty crime are motivated by anything but racial paranoia. By any reasonable global or historical standards the city of Richmond is quite safe. It is not however a sanitized soul-less shopping mall and occasionally bad people do bad things. This is called reality. Some of us choose to deal with it instead of hiding in the suburbs with our guns.
Sounds like black-on-black crime. Tsk, Tsk, and the old slave trading arena was not far from that location.
Yeah! Shockoe Bottom, the place to take your kids out for baseball! Don’t go to the 2pm games, it’s dangerous out there in broad daylight. What a crock that entire fiasco was. I’m glad it’s finally over. I hope the woman recovers fully from her ordeal. No person no where should ever have to worry about their safety, especially in broad daylight.
And let me guess, the news paper has not printed the description of the suspect because the car was rep-orted stolen shortly after the attack.
There appears to be some scum floating in the bottom.
