An off-duty Henrico County police officer will serve 10 days in jail after a judge convicted him yesterday of driving under the influence.

J.L. Crain, 30, pleaded no contest to the drunken-driving chargestemming from a Sept. 20 accident in western Henrico at 1:30 a.m. Crain showed a blood-alcohol concentration of .28 percent, more than three times the limit and one that carries a mandatory jail sentence.

Crain also will lose his license for a year and was fined $250. General District Judge John Marshall sentenced Crain to six months in jail with all but 10 days suspended.

Crain, who once worked with a unit that investigated underage drinking, called Party Crashers, will report to jail Oct. 30.

Toni M. Randall, who is an assistant commonwealth's attorney in Richmond, prosecuted the case.

Crain's job status as a police officer was unclear last night. -- Bill McKelway

Not even a 16 year old would get into a car when they are almost comatose.  I guess this is karma for breaking constitutional rights, but more importantly, ruining many people’s beach week plans.  It’s sad that half of the people on this board will excuse a 30 year old man for such an asinine decision.  Life is stressful, that’s no excuse to go against everything you stand for and get in a car after downing a fifth of jim beam.

Most of the time when police or public officials are arrested for DUI, they have been caught numerous times previously and let go.

Mai-tai…why don’t you defend your statements instead of whining.  Or use some logic and insight to counter mine.  Still waiting…..

Hey Mai-tai…hope you weren’t referring to me (trolling).  I just simply pointed out the stupidity in your statement.  Sorry if that upsets you.  I didn’t make fun of you or just start flaming (til now).  Just pointed out the weakness in your spine-less comment.

He should lose his license entirely with a higher fine. Police take advantage of their position ALL the time. Today, I saw a cop and his friends in a squad car, speeding, music blaring and all in the fan. It’s f*cked up when they treat you like a criminal and they, themselves, are criminals. Since its a one for all, all for one thing for them, so one bad cop puts a dent to everyone.

10 days? What a joke.  Is that going to teach him a lesson? I don’t think so.  He should have gotten more time, because he is and should be held to a higher standard.

Nothing like a couple of good trolls to make the board interesting. Shouldn’t you be on R&R?
