Henrico police suspect man posed as trooper

Authorities are investigating whether a man who pulled over a woman Friday in Henrico County was posing as a state trooper.

The man was driving a silver or gray Dodge Intrepid when he stopped the 23-year-old woman on Etheridge Road near Horsepen Road and Glenside Drive shortly after 6 p.m., authorities said yesterday.

The man activated a siren and a blue strobe light that was mounted beside his rear-view mirror, Henrico police Lt. Steve Sparagna said.

He approached the woman and showed her a badge that was in a wallet, Sparagna said. The man told her he was a state officer and said that if he were not in a hurry, he would write her some tickets. Then he drove away.

The woman was unharmed.

Sparagna said state police were unaware of any unmarked units in the area when the woman was stopped.

Everyone should know that you can dial #77 and the dispatcher will be able to verify if you are being pulled over by an actual trooper.

It is also your RIGHT to get to a safe and well-lit location (ie: gas station) before pulling over for an officer.
