Richmond Store owner grateful for man who shot robber

Three days after Mustapha Kassou was shot in an attempted robbery in his store in South Richmond, he said that he owed his life to the man who ended the ordeal by shooting the robber.

Yesterday, Kassou returned to Golden Food Market on Jefferson Davis Highway for the first time since he was shot there Saturday afternoon.

Kassou said the masked robber walked into the store shortly after 1 p.m. and seemed startled to see about eight people inside. The robber told everyone to get on the floor, and then he fired at Kassou and hit him twice, he said.

"When the guy shot me, I was waiting for him to finish me," Kassou said. "I was knocked down behind the cash register."

The other armed man pulled a six-shot revolver from his holster and told the robber to drop his weapon, Kassou said. When he didn't, authorities say, the man shot the robber once in the torso, took the robber's gun and called police.

Witnesses told police it appeared the robber ran out of bullets and tried to reload. Some people in the store told the man to finish off the robber, witnesses reported.

"Everyone was telling him to kill him," Kassou said, "but he said, 'I can't do it.'"

Saturday's incident was the second such shooting at the store in a month.

The two shootings at Golden Food and the fatal shooting of a shopkeeper last month in another store just blocks away have alarmed some nearby residents, although police say the number of violent crimes along the Jefferson Davis corridor has been declining since May.

Councilwoman Reva Trammell, whose 8th District includes the corridor, and police Cmdr. Steve Drew will hold a public safety meeting for Jeff Davis-area business owners tonight from 6 to 8 at the Satellite Restaurant, 4000 Jefferson Davis Highway.

Kassou was released from the hospital Sunday, but he was limping and in obvious pain yesterday. He sat inside his store with family members, but he kept the front door locked. He said the shootings have made him scared of almost everyone.

He said he was struggling with whether he should reopen the store. He does not know how he would support his wife and two children if he chooses to keep the store closed.

Kassou said he is considering returning to his native Morocco. He said he is an American citizen and has lived here about 20 years and loves this country.

"It's not worth it anymore," he said, adding that he will arm himself if he reopens the store.

Kassou said he still is alive because of God -- and because of the man who drew a .45-caliber Western-style revolver and ended Saturday's robbery by shooting the gunman.

"He saved a lot of lives," Kassou said. "He was like an angel who came to save everybody."

Authorities say the robber was wounded after he shot Kassou and fired on customers.

Neither Kassou nor the police would identify the man who shot the robber. Authorities said an initial investigation indicates the man acted lawfully when he shot the robber.

Police have charged James Grooms III, 30, of South Richmond with attempted robbery, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He remained in critical condition last night at VCU Medical Center.

A woman who said she is one of Grooms' relatives declined to comment when reached by phone yesterday.

I am grateful the press was at lest fair to the gun owner and not try to spin it anti-gun.  That said, for a more accurate and complete picture of what really happened…read this.

onephoto…PLEASE do not tell me you believe this criminal had a LICENSE to carry his gun?

NO person that is a convicted felon can legally purchase and own a gun, much less the license to do so.

Laws stop the criminals from doing things legally, therefore they find illegal ways to get their crime done.

It’s a darn good thing that “hero” decided to arm himself (and protected others). All this talk and EXCUSES made for that scum bag of a criminal is a reminder how ignorant and stupid people are. If I walked into someone’s castle to robb them and shoot them I’d expect to die too. I feel absolutely no sympathy for “James” or his family. Hope he burns. ARM YOURSELFS AGAINST SCUM OF THE EARTH. ....for the man that took him down, you should be proud that you saved your life and others. Stand TALL.

Realist what you said was true and i respect your opinion and honesty. Hes my cousin and i felt the same way you did. The customer had to do what he did to get James to stop even when people wanted him to finish him off even though he did kill him he was brave and had to do what he did. James was a good person. Nobody comes out the wound a bad person so for people 2 make comments about him not ever being a good person is ignorant. He fell n2 a bad predicament and he lost his life way b4 he actually died. It can happen to the best of us!

i could care less what Grooms’ past was about.  I seriously doubt he was a great guy that fell on bad times.  but regardless of who he was, he did something stupid and should accept what has happened to him.  death was too much of a easy way out.  the bullet should have severed his spine and he would be rendered useless.

But on second though, everyone should shoot to kill.  thats one less scum, and less bullets to waste.

James got just what he deserved he had no regards for human life. I don’t have any pity for him.  It does not matter to me what type of person he use to be it’s what he has become. Which is a low life, looking to take what other have worked for. My heart goes out to the person who ended his life.  The reason being is he will have to live with taking a life after not wanting too. He did what he had too and someone have to stop these guys. My only wish is someone catch all the other thieves and robbers still out here preying on the innocent.

This is where people got my comments about Grooms twisted; see the thing is, is not to make him look like a saint, because that the last thing he was at this point in life, but what I was saying is that, that was not the person I knew sometime ago, and I’m glad the customer/hero shot him and just maybe he wouldv’e learned a lesson by it, and hopefully he would go back to the religious person he was to start with. However, he is dead now and has left behind a beautiful daughter that loves and cherish her father, for he was a wonderful person in her eyes. So the next time anyone wants to comment on what I wrote please read and understand before making anal comments. Just remember no-one is perfect and It could end up being one of your family members that loose it. People do it all the time so be careful in how you judge others. For GOD is the only judge and it is him that places tests and trials within your life. Grooms was just one of many people who gave up and took the wrong path in life. Think about it! And to be honest he did some things to one of my brothers and my family suffered a great deal, but I don’t hate him. Live your life and let GOD do his job!

To the folks that are trying to make this armed robber look like some kind of saint that “fell on bad times” - you apologists are one of the biggest problems we have in society.  I’m sorry, but when you commit an armed robbery and shoot an innocent victim - you no longer are a “good person”, I dont care what you “used” to be like.  Either you have it in your heart to do something like that or you don’t.  There is no middle ground.  Why aren’t you willing to hold this man accountable, and say yes its unfortunate that he has died, but he was wrong and I understand why he lost his life.  The citizen that took action and shot the suspect in this situation should be commended for being willing to act and possibly save someone elses life.  Novel idea isn’t it - to actually care about your community and be willing to do something when you see something wrong - instead of immediately trying to think of a way to excuse the behavior and blame it on “the inequality of society”.  Part of our problem as a society is we are unwilling or reluctant to hold our own accountable, whatever group or community we may belong to.
