No injuries were reported this morning in an armed robbery that occurred on Virginia Commonwealth University's main academic campus.

Two young men told Richmond police they were sitting on a wall in the 700 block of West Franklin Street, opposite the north side of Monroe Park, when they were confronted at 12:30 a.m. by two unknown males who first asked for a light. One of the suspects then pulled a handgun and demanded money.

The two victims surrendered their wallets and cell phones, and the suspects ran.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (804) 780-1000.

Situations like this is why we all need to have concealed carry permits.

Has anyone noticed that these people who got robbed were sitting ON A WALL AT 12:30 am?? Why will you be sitting there anyway? Stupid. And who gave the comment about VCU removing their unlawful Administrative Rule about students lawfully carrying firearms to protect themselves is a little? In the event of a robbery, you wouldn’t have time to pull it out. That would just lead to more people getting hurt whether they deserve it or not. How hard is it anyway to hand over your cellphone and wallet? Sorry for the cash but debit, credit, driver license cards, etc. can be easily replaced now. If the perps try to use your cards, that would have a higher chance of locating them.

I keep seeing people complain about the police… Any of you bother to see all they ARE accomplishing? Or are you too busy whining?  Here’s the deal.  If you live or work in the city of Richmond, then it’s YOUR PROBLEM TOO.  If you don’t make an effort to take back your streets, report crimes, act as witnesses, give descriptions of the criminals and basically not hide and whine because someone else isn’t working miracles, then the police CAN’T fix the problems.

The Richmond Police need to crack down on the robbery problem in the VCU/FAN area—there have been far too many in recent months. This is a serious problem. I agree that they should implement an undercover operation and start locking up some-or more—of these thugs. Enough is enough…

“my mistake.  the students who were given handguns as gifts or purchased them illegally before they were 21 should still be barred from bringing guns to school”.

Yep, good strategy. We can send an 18 year old off to war in a foreign land with a firearm but we dare not allow them the means to protect themselves a block from home…If one lawfully armed student at VT had been allowed to carry his handgun (as so many students there had requested to do), the tragedy there wouldn’t have reached the level that it did.

and just FYI, an 18 year old can be gifted a handgun, or they can purchase it from a private seller, all perfectly legal. No one under 21 has to try to obtain a tool of self-defense illegally as you suggest.

“it is extremely unlikely these individuals are old enough to own handguns. in fact i would say the overwhelming majority of VCU students are not old enough to own handguns”.

squier - in Virginia, anyone 18 years old or older may own a handgun, and they may carry it openly…pefectly legal.

Last time I checked, the vast majority of college students were 18+ years old.

I do not live in the Fan, nor did I attend VCU. This is sad. RPD needs to implement some sort of Robbery task force. That close to the campus, something had to be caught on camera.

It has to be the same two black males reported robbing people on main st across from Mulligans. More than several robberies around VCU in the fan with the same description.  Police may have an idea who it is and doesn’t need John Q Publics help…..
