Bribery attempt alleged in Richmond hit-and-run case
Richmond authorities will seek an indictment Monday against a man who they say tried to bribe someone to lie in court on his behalf in a case involving a hit-and-run crash that killed a 15-year-old girl.
Prosecutors will ask a grand jury to indict Bryan Christopher Shull, 36, of Lake Hills Road in Chesterfield County on charges of bribing a witness, attempted procurement of perjury and obstruction of justice, according to Managing Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Tracy Thorne-Begland.
Authorities allege that Shull tried to bribe a witness to provide untruthful testimony in the case involving Tiara Rosa's death. A vehicle struck her as she walked with her mother along Walmsley Boulevard in South Richmond on Jan. 16. She died the next day.
The bribery allegations stem from an alleged incident May 19.
Shull was arrested Jan. 28 -- 12 days after Rosa was killed. He has been indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run in the case and is scheduled for trial on those charges Sept. 3.
Shull's brother, Sean Beir, testified at a preliminary hearing in March that Shull was driving the two of them along Walmsley to buy cigarettes Jan. 16 when Beir felt the pickup truck run over something.
From the passenger seat, Beir turned and saw someone lying on the side of the road around 9 or 10 p.m., he said.
According to Beir, Shull said he could not stop because he had been drinking.
Beir said his brother had two mixed drinks before they left Shull's home in Chesterfield. Beir said he also had been drinking that night, and that the two had smoked marijuana.
Shull's attorney was in court yesterday and could not be reached for comment.
