Henrico minister beaten, stabbed

-- A preacher who was beaten and stabbed in his church in Henrico County on Saturday morning was released from the hospital last night.

The Rev. James Bullock, pastor of First Free Will Baptist Church on Hungary Road, was practicing his singing Saturday morning when two men barged into his office, said Brenda McPeak, a church representative.

The men demanded money and started beating Bullock after he told them there was no safe in the church, said Henrico police Lt. Charles Ferrigno.

Police said last night that no arrests had been made in the incident.

Bullock, 55, said he was punched, kicked and beaten over the head with a rock-shaped paperweight that was on his desk, according to McPeak, who spoke with Bullock after the attack.

He was stabbed twice in the body with a pocketknife and suffered razor cuts on both arms, McPeak said.

Bullock, who had been practicing for a Saturday evening concert, told McPeak after the attack that he had gotten in a couple of "pretty good" punches during the ordeal.

"He said he fought for his life," McPeak said. "I think he fought back and saved his life."

The preacher was knocked unconscious. He woke up and called McPeak shortly after 8 a.m., sounding weak as he told her he had been severely beaten, she said.

At some point after he came to, Bullock left the church and walked up the driveway toward a nearby police car, falling down a couple of times on the way, said George Munn, chairman of the church's deacon board.

Bullock was taken to VCU Medical Center.

"He had, of course, a rough night last night," Munn said yesterday. "He was in a lot of pain from the beating."

Bullock did not want to be interviewed for this article, McPeak said.

At the end of a church service yesterday, more than 60 people joined hands and prayed in a circle around the sanctuary at First Free Will.

Church members said it was important to show forgiveness for Bullock's attackers.

"I would just like to say to these guys who did this that I love them in Christ, and I am praying for them," Margaret Poston said after the service. "There's no anger at all."

The church was founded in 1952, and its current location was built in 1972, Munn said. Bullock has been pastor about 12 years.

"He's such a sweet man, a loving man, a caring man," said church member Cindy Warner.

One of the pastor's attackers was described as a heavyset white man about 5-foot-9 who appeared to be in his mid-40s and was wearing a black coat and blue jeans.

The other assailant was said to be a muscular-looking white man between 5-foot-4 and 5-foot-6 with a thin mustache and shoulder-length dark-brown hair with long bangs and long sideburns. He was wearing a brown plaid shirt with baggy blue jeans.

Police called the attack unusual in the well-established residential community between West End Drive and Staples Mill Road.

"We haven't encountered anything similar in this area," Lt. Bryan Cook said.

Seems that two crooks would just locate the safe themselves, rather than spend time whooping-up on a guy with rocks & scissors because he said there wasn’t a safe.

Just practicing my critical thinking skills. No harm intended.

he was not found by the McPeaks. he called them when he gained conciousness. he walked outside to try to flag someone down after talking to the McPeaks. there happened to be a cop sitting in the parking lot running radar by this time. trying to reach the cop across the parking lot, he fell twice. my husbands uncle reached the church before other cops and rescue ever responded. his first instinct was to call the McPeaks so they could go tell his wife and comfort her, and call 911. he then figured in a busy area, if he went outside he may be able to get the attention of someone passing bye. the news has left out many parts of this story. causing confusion and leading people to believe this was fabricated. it is all very true, just not delivered correctly by the media.

The sad thing to me is that we have become so cyncical that we automatically have a doubt about EVERYTHING !!!  Leave the speculation to the police, people, and show some common sense.

All I know is channel 8 said that he was found by McPeak who called 911.  I don’t think the guy made it up and it could be the lady was shaken up that the report wasn’t given right.

I am affiliated with this church and Rev. Bullock is a good man and would not fabricate being beaten like he did.  In the last few years crime has slowly been moving towards that area and anyone that knows that church knows that it is pretty far off the road for something like this to happen and have no one see a thing.  I also know that there are at least 2 officers that live in that area and within walking distance so maybe the Rev. thought it would be faster then waiting for Henrico police who in most cases take forever when called or he could have been so disoriented he didn’t know what he was doing.  There is no way to say for sure what anyone would have done in that situation.  Generally no one has been in this type of situation to know what they would have done or not done after being beaten to unconciousness.  I’m sure it makes sense to call 911 and stay put but after having something so heinous happen he probably did whatever first came to mind.  He was lucky to even wake up and be able to call anyone.  That man did not deserve this after everything he does for those who need help.  We will continue to pray for his recovery and that justice will come to the those who did this to him.

you people are heartless who think this story is untrue!!! the criminals were after money. most churches have a safe the hold offering money in over the weekend, this church does not. when the preacher told them there was no safe they proceeded to act violently against him. for whoever thinks this sad situation did not happen, you’re sick for thinking its fabricated.

Thanks for clearing this up “edolphs” I knew something was not right. Does anyone at the Richmond Times Dispatch read the articles before they publish them or do they just put whatever half-wit crap together they can to fill a page and rely on readers to fix their many blunders?

let me start off by saying Mr. Bullock is my in-laws family preacher and married my husband and I just 2 months ago. there is nothing weird about this situation - just a random violent crime. crime can happen anywhere - anytime. the media never gives fully true stories - so dont assume anything. this was a senseless act, all for money. these men have left our preacher in a beaten, painful state. He was left unconcious for over an hour, when he finally woke up he called the McPeak’s to call 911 and have Ms. McPeak go give the news to his wife and comfort her while Mr. McPeak rushed to the church to the preacher. please keep him, his wife and his congregation in your prayers.

Sounds like the Timesdispatch didn’t get enough facts again.  The news said he was found by McPeak who called 911. He didn’t go stumbling out on the street.  Come on Timesdispatch, if you are going to keep raising prices at least get the facts straight.

I agree with Lloyd. In my opinion, looks like a fabricated story of a violence where for some reason, victim doesnont want to reveal the names of attackers. Generally in this kind of situation, first reaction of the victim would be calling either 911 or a nearest family member. Then will be sitting quietly in his place untill the help arrives and not walking outside even if he is falling. I am sure some twist to this story will come out. Of course, whatever be the reason, nobody has a right to hurt this person, and whoever did it, should be brought to the justice. God bless this victim.
