Shooting wounds East End boy, 10

A 10-year-old boy was shot early yesterday at the Whitcomb Court public-housing project in Richmond's East End.

Alicia Rasin, acting as a spokeswoman for the boy's mother, identified the victim as Trequan Bugg, a fourth-grader at Fairfield Court Elementary School. He was shot in the head and is expected to recover, Rasin said.

Trequan was shot in the 2300 block of Ambrose Street about 12:35 a.m. as he arrived home from a visit to his grandmother's home with his mother and her two other children, Rasin said.

They got out of a car and were walking toward their apartment when they heard gunshots, Rasin said. Trequan's mother, Darlene Bugg, told her children to get down.

"Everybody got up, but Trequan didn't get up," said Rasin, founder of Citizens Against Crime.

"She doesn't know if they were shooting out of a car. She doesn't know if they were running down the street shooting," Rasin said.

A news release from Richmond police said the boy was "struck by a bullet from a distance."

Trequan was taken to VCU Medical Center. Rasin said he was showing progress but that the bullet cannot be removed because of its sensitive location.

Neighbors reacted with outrage that Trequan -- described as a regular kid who plays video games and waves to his neighbors -- could become a victim of violence.

"I've got a 10-year-old child myself," said one woman, who did not give her name for fear of retaliation.

Another woman said she is fed up with residents having to hit the floor in their own homes to avoid bullets.

"We can't even sit on our porch and enjoy ourselves," she said.

No arrest had been made yesterday.

Police were asking anyone with information on the shooting to call (804) 514-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
