Four shot, wounded in North Richmond
Published: November 1, 2009
Richmond police say this morning that four people were shot just after midnight in North Richmond, and at least one victim has life-threatening injuries.
The shootings occurred at a gathering in a residence in the 3000 block of Barton Avenue. Two victims, one with life-threatening injuries, were taken from there to VCU Medical Center, police said in a news release.
A few minutes later, a third person was found in an alley behind the 3000 block of Woodrow Avenue, and a fourth in the 600 block of Bancroft Avenue. They were also taken to the medical center with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Police said they are working on suspect descriptions and asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

Face it, every city has crime problems. I travel plenty between Philly and Charlotte, and all points in between (and down to Fla occasionally as well)- our crime rate is no different basically - all factors considered; maybe even better than many communities in these areas. The biggest difference I see is lack of pride in our region, AND the lack of a stong leader or influential group with clout who wants to - and does - make their area better. They think BIG and go for it. They also succeed in developing something that the region hangs it’s hat on, and lo and behold, the area just takes off! Just look at Charlotte, Raleigh, Baltimore, Greensboro, Wilmington (Del) and Greenville/Spartansburg! Most of these areas used to take a back seat to good ‘ole Richmond, but no more. That’s the real crime!
Crime is everywhere. South Richmond (falling both in Richmond and Chesterfield) has been a tremendous mess lately. North Richmond has beautiful areas and trashy areas. The population density makes the numbers look worse… But as I’ve noticed, the inner city crimes tend to involve either the obvious ghetto areas or county people that have come into the area… or both. Off your high horse guys. Oh, and I live on 750 acres and still have crime issues on the property periodically.
Come on folks. Every where has challenges. Didn’t a suburban kid hit another kid in the head with an ax last week? Don’t be so smug and judgemental.
yeahthisworks: The phraseology is ludicrous because one is addressing Mr. Kevlar vest and his timid homies. But the question is a real one: are pedestrian fatalities counting in the deaths that you list? You have to admit that while Chesterfield has more people, Richmond has more people who walk and bike. If pedestrian fatalities are removed from the mix, what is the death rate per thousand then?
Not “all” of Northside is crime ridden (Ginter Park/Bellevue, etc). The City of Richmond is beautiful even with its challenges.
The folks that are “scared” of the city should definitely stay in their “ivory towers” out in suburbia land; where they can compete with “the Jones”.
Obviously most of these “scared folks”
have really never visited a “big city” - my advice - don’t go to New York b/c you are liable to get eaten alive!...lol
Kudos to Mr. Conservative. Supporting illegal activities or going into known crime areas is just asking for trouble. Whether we like it or not, the biggest challenge to Richmond’s crime rate is Black-on-Black crime.
The city is fine and safe, the area, “northside” is dangerous but it’s seperate from the city and you would only go there to buy drugs. Don’t get me wrong it’s beautiful but it’s about containment.
Wow, what a completely ludicrous and unworthy of a reply response. Guess we’ll call this one Game, Set, and Match. Thanks.
“ not the state and I still stand by the same DMV report on Virginia Crash Facts”
Yes, but how many of the Richmond fatalities were the result of people from the counties in SUV’s who were clutching their cellphones and looking down the alleys in so much fear that they squashed a bicyclist or pedestrian—two species of travelers with which they were completely unacquainted?
Per the discussion here, we are talking about the Richmond and its surrounding counties (Chesterfield & Henrico), not the state and I still stand by the same DMV report on Virginia Crash Facts:
CountyCity Death Rate Per Driver
Chesterfield .13
Henrico .09
City of Richmond .17
