Hanover issues 13 summonses at weekend DUI checkpoint

» 26 Comments | Post a Comment

Hanover County authorities say they had to end a DUI checkpoint early today because four of the five deputies made arrests, leaving too few resources to continue.

The checkpoint lasted from 11:30 p.m. Friday until 2:50 a.m. on Atlee Station Road near Atlee High School.

Authorities placed DUI charges, issued 13 summonses and placed charges of drunk in public, underage possession of alcohol, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, having an open container of alcohol and possession of marijuana. About 160 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

It’s not about safety.  It’s about revenue.  These people aren’t going to lose their licenses permanently.  They will pay the Commonwealth and their lawyers large sums of money and eventually get their licenses back.

If driving is a privilege and a person abuses the privilege to an extent that someone could have been killed, logic dictates that the privilege should be revoked permantly.

Large fines and short license suspensions are a minor inconvenience to the wealthy and more of a burden to low income drivers or those who drive for a living.

To me it’s always the one’s that complain that are the one’s that I bet ARE drinking and driving! It’s about time they use tax money to do something worth while, like getting the drunks off the road and from behind any wheel,Before it’s to late and they kill someone, and have you notice it’s rarely the drunk that get’s killed?
God dont be so stupid!

entrapment??  illegal search?  it’s illegal to ask you for your license and registration??  it’s illegal to use your sense of smell to see if someone’s drinking?  What planet do you live on?  I’ll make sure I don’t go there.  I’ll go through a checkpoint every night if it keeps the drunk drivers from killing my family and friends or anyone else’s.  They aren’t stopping random people and searching their belongings.  They stop you and ask you for your license and registration, which since it is a PRIVILEGE to drive, and it’s required to have available to anyone who asks is obviously NOT against the law.  How about this, if you don’t like it…  leave.

mikeyt, It is not political correctness to “police” ones neighborhood against illegal activity. Every citizen has a right to drink but it is a state given privilege to drive.

DUI checkpoints clearly are entrapment and violate the Fourth Amendment against illegal search, but those facts are ignored because of political correctness. Don’t get me wrong—I’m glad we get drunks off the road. But we need to do it legally. Checkpoints are not legal, and just because the Supremes ruled it’s legal doesn’t make it right. The Supremes have been wrong before—Kelo v. City of New London for one.

mjrichmond, Your freedom is is being allowed to drive. My freedom is being allowed to drive without some drunk or cell phone user causing an accident and maybe killing someone you love in the mean time. I would like it to be illegal to use a cell phone while driving too. They cause too many accidents and deaths every year.

This is excellent police work. I hope they expand it and get ALL the drunks off the road. They should take all the drunks drivers license until they undergo an evaluation to be allowed the privilege to drive again.

if a minor is drinking and is with you…  then you are contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Forget the DUI’s issued for a second… I’d like to know how “drunk in public” charges were placed at a traffic site? I mean, if a passenger were to get out of a stopped car, they could be charged with DIP, but that doesn’t exactly sound fair…

Also, contributing to the delinquency of a minor? I’d like to know how that is determined during a traffic stop…
