Hanover issues 13 summonses at weekend DUI checkpoint
Published: October 31, 2009
Hanover County authorities say they had to end a DUI checkpoint early today because four of the five deputies made arrests, leaving too few resources to continue.
The checkpoint lasted from 11:30 p.m. Friday until 2:50 a.m. on Atlee Station Road near Atlee High School.
Authorities placed DUI charges, issued 13 summonses and placed charges of drunk in public, underage possession of alcohol, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, having an open container of alcohol and possession of marijuana. About 160 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

I apparently did not read what some of the others of you read in Drhoagie’s post. I did not read that he was telling people how to drink and drive and get away with it, or that it is okay to drink and drive. I read that if you do not wish to be tied up in a traffic check where you must prove that you did not break the law by drinking and driving, you can do so by using the method he suggests. Cars can, and should be equipped with mechanical devices that do not allow the car to start if alcohol is detected. These devices are much more effective, and would free the time of the police officers at checkpoints.
First off as a resident of Hanover I would like to thank those deputies that took time from their families to do the DUI check. As A LEO in another county I know all too well that those duties are most often OT and at times done under less than ideal conditions. They are however necessary to keep those off of the road who could care less about the safety of others. I’m sure that they as I would rather be doing something else but then again I would rather do checkpoints than knock on someones door in the middle of the night with that type of “news”.
If you have never had to deliver that type of news consider yourself lucky.
If you have never had to wake up to that knock at your door, Thank God.
I’m not against someone going out for a good time or having a drink with dinner but we must remember to use good judgment. Drinking and driving don’t mix. I’d rather you loose your privilege to drive than loose your life.
And I sure don’t wish any bad luck on drhoagie. After all if he were to run off of the road as you suggest more than likely he would kill someone else and himself not get a scratch….
drhoagie, DUI checkpoints are done to make the roads safer for you and your family. One could guess that if one of those 13 had hit and killed your wife or one of your kids you would have been yelling about the “lack of DUI enforcement”. Telling others how to avoid checkpoints is not being a responsible driver but part of the problem. Don’t drink and drive or support those that do. We will all be safer on the roads.
Mr. hoagie, be very careful,,,,,,,,,,,, Uncle Sam and the NSA in Odenton MD can track EVERYTHING you say and that is just fine with me as long as they lock up a few bad “FOREIGN” folks as well along the way!!! But that would be PROFILING right, in this once great country???
Or just look out in BeaverHOOD by the by, Western HANGOVER County you may just find some more fine residence, if not well that your fault Mr. Policeman for not listening to the TRUTH !!!
lol there’s no “massive traffic jams” in Hanover between 1130 and 2am. Don’t drive drunk and you won’t need to worry about the police DUI checkpoints.
There is a great application for iPhones and Blackberry called “Trapster”. Users report where checkpoints are via built in GPS. If any citizen is interested in not being caught up in massive traffic jams created by these roadblocks, download the free app and alert other concerned citizens.
