UPDATE: Richmond jury acquits 2 officers in obstruction cases

» 11 Comments | Post a Comment

A jury of seven women today acquitted two more Richmond police officers accused of obstruction of justice.

The jury found officers William A. House and Ian McCloskey not guilty of one count each of obstruction of justice. Yesterday, Judge Bradley B. Cavedo acquitted a third defendant, Floyd T. Campbell II.

Outside the courthouse after today’s verdict, attorneys for House said the ordeal has been so stressful that House plans to resign from the Richmond Police Department and return to Texas, where his father is a police officer.

Authorities alleged that McCloskey beat up a man in a bar in Shockoe Bottom on Jan. 22, 2008, and that Campbell and House, the responding officers, tried to cover it up.

dee65, where in my comments did I state that 7 women can’t come to a competent decision?

All I was stating was that typically juries reflect the locality and Richmond is mixed gender and mixed race.  I know for a fact there were men of all ages that were dismissed.  All woman jury is very competent, just not a true reflection of “your peers”.

Maybe instead of calling me stupid, YOU should smarten up and READ the comments!

How the heck we get O.J and Vick in this one is beyond me .The cops covered for each other the D.A. didn’t push a case ,the officer assaulted and then paid the victims medical fees, guilty ,case closed .

What’s the surprise? After all most cops can get by with any illegal behavior and acts they choose. Just remember the recent murder of a handicapped man in Chesterfield County. The two female officers didn’t even get a slap on the wrist. Now they are back on duty waiting for the next opportunity.

Be very careful when dealing with cops. They can be very hazardous to your health.

The DE FACTO law: Cops can do whatever they want, and they know it.

I hope these seven women feel real safe tonight.  Idiots.

If the defendants had been two women and the jury was all-male, there’d be h*ell to pay—it’d be a federal case in an instant.

One point for the Prosecution—they rarely ever go after the police officers.  The police are integral in getting most convictions in trial cases.  Must have been something for the prosecution to have determined they had better prosecute these cops—maybe, it was political as the screaming would have continued if no trial had taken place.  In the 1980’s, a cop killed a teenager that had been riding in a tow truck. The cop had been drinking behind police headquarters with another police officer and started tailing this tow truck driver.  The cop even went as far as reloading higher velocity rounds into his .38 special.  Seems like he was upgrading his weaponry for combat.  After the tow truck driver pulled over, they got into an argument and the cop started shooting into the tow truck, killing an innocent teenager. The cop got a slap on his wrist—didn’t get more than one and a half years in jail.  Cops are human, but they aren’t covered by the same parameters of law as ordinary “non police” citizens.

mjrichmond- Are you saying that 7 WOMEN can’t come to a competent decision without having a male involved? I guess you are too stupid to serve on a jury. The jury is there to review the evidence presented by the defense and the prosecutor and come to a sound decision, apparently that’s what they did but there’s never satisfying the public because there will always be the naysayers.

There’s no “alleged” about it.  McCloskey DID assault a man, and House and Campbell DID try and sweep it under the rug.  The jury found that they did not commit a crime in doing so.  But no one disputes the assault or subsequent behavior.

I guess when the police commits a crime its ok’ for them to walk away free….. What a world we live in…

—2 male defendants
—7 woman jury

Jury of their peers?????

I guess men are just too stupid to serve on the jury.  Wonder how it would have went down in this PC culture if the jury was all-male.
