H-SC presents Final Convocation awards to 13 from Richmond area

Thirteeen students from the Richmond area recently received awards at Final Convocation at Hampden-Sydney College.

  • Senior Jason Craig Butler received the Joshua Warren White Award for outstanding sportsmanship on and off the playing field in intercollegiate athletics (soccer). A history major, Butler is a graduate of Mills E. Godwin High School and is the son of Patti D. Butler of Richmond.

  • Junior James Willis Davis received the Jeffrey N. Friend Award for his generous spirit, leadership skills and ability to bring out the best in others. A mathematical economics and Spanish major, Davis is a graduate of Clover Hill High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Davis of Midlothian.

  • Senior Bryan William Greenfield received the P.T. Atkinson Award, named in honor of the college's former business manager and treasurer. It's given to the member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity who best exemplifies Atkinson's legacy. A biology and Spanish major, Greenfield graduated from Midlothian High School and is the son of Lynette B. Greenfield of Chesterfield.

  • Senior Michael Craig Hamman received the Hardy Cross Award, which recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement in physics. A physics and computer science major, Hamman is a graduate of Manchester High School and is the son of Craig and Stella Hamman of Richmond.

  • Junior Joseph Ernest Howard received the Minter Award, which is presented to a singer who has developed the skills needed for a lifetime of appreciation of vocal music. A biology major, Howard is a graduate of New Kent High School and is the son of Joanne and Sam Howard of Lanexa.

  • Senior Robert Christian Malott received the Gemborys-Choate-Bouin-Swenson Award for International Studies. The award is presented annually to a student who participated in a foreign-study experience and demonstrated personal growth by incorporating broader world views into his life. A French and religion major, Malott is a graduate of James River High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas E. Malott of Midlothian.

  • Senior Spencer Ryan Mobley received the John Marshall Writing Award that honors a senior for excellence in writing on political science topics. A political science major, Mobley is a graduate of Clover Hill High School and is the son of Russell W. Mobley of Midlothian.

  • Senior Andrew Patrick Murphy received the Grace and Hassell Simpson Prize for Excellence in English. An English major, Murphy is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Murphy of Midlothian.

  • Senior Evan Matthew Rogers received the Dunnington Dedication Award for Baseball that recognizes dedication to the sport and leadership on the team. Rogers is a graduate of Lloyd C. Bird High School and is the son of Carson and Teresa Rogers of Chester.

  • Junior Henry Clarke Skiba received the Topham Chemistry Award, named for Richard W. Topham, professor of biochemistry and chairman of the department at the University of Richmond. The award is granted annually to a junior who exemplifies Topham's ideals. A chemistry and applied mathematics major, Skiba is a graduate of Benedictine High School and is the son of Mary Carter Hyman and Joe Skiba of Richmond.

  • Senior James Andrew Surface received the Lewis and Nell Drew Student Government Award for service to the college or community through student government. A chemistry major, Surface was home-schooled. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Surface of Midlothian.

  • Senior Christopher Richard Tangard received the William Hendley Award in Economics. The economics department presents the award to the senior economics major who has benefited the most from his major. An economics and commerce and Spanish major, Tangard is a graduate of Benedictine High School and is the son of Richard and Sophie Tangard of Richmond.

  • Junior Charles Collins Wesley II received the Rhetoric Speech Award for his winning speech, "Hip-Hop is an Art." A history and economics major, Wesley is a graduate of Highland Springs High School and is the son of Robin Christmas Wesley of Richmond and Charles Wesley of Sandston.

Hampden-Sydney, a private men's college, first enrolled students in 1775.
