Breakdown of cafeteria inspections

School cleanliness

A review of inspections at 252 schools in Richmond, Petersburg and Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield Counties shows:
120 had no critical violations during inspections conducted during the 2008-09 school year; and
93 had two or fewer total
critical violations for the year
Here are some examples of critical violations inspectors found at area schools. These
violations were corrected:
Oct. 30, 2008: Employees were observed handling ready-to-eat food with bare hands at
Beaverdam Elementary School
in Hanover County.
April 27: Food particles were left on a slicer at Douglas
Freeman High School in
Henrico County.
June 11: Cold chocolate milk was kept at an improper temperature, above 41 degrees, at Binford Middle School in
Richmond.
Other violations were discovered that health inspectors classify as noncritical, that by themselves are not likely to lead to a person getting sick. Those include:
June 3: Walls and ceiling were not maintained in good repair. Holes were in both and paint was chipping throughout the kitchen area at J.E.B. Stuart Ele mentary School in Petersburg.
April 28: Improper methods were used to thaw fish at
Petersburg High School in
Petersburg.
June 5: School was storing unnecessary items to the operation or maintenance of the establishment. All Saints Catholic School in Richmond was storing a volleyball net in the kitchen, which was corrected during the inspection.
March 23: A teacher entered the cafeteria kitchen and reached into an ice dispenser at Moody Middle School in Henrico County. The inspector noted that it is unknown if the teacher washed hands.
