Hopewell High work delay may be costly
HOPEWELL -- Phasing in a $26.6 million renovation project at Hopewell High School could eventually cost the city an extra $9 million, an architect told City Council members last night.
Duane M. Harver, with Norfolk-based RRMM Architects, told the council that the city has the option to delay renovations at the school's gym, auditorium and kitchen and cafeteria to bring the costs of the project to nearly $20 million.
But in two years, those renovations would be more expensive, he said, and could add $9 million to the total cost. Harver recommended the city approve the entire project -- including renovations to plumbing, electrical and ventilation systems -- at $26.6 million.
City Manager Edwin C. Daley suggested that the City Council approve the project with a cost cap of $20 million, which he said would mean a 3-cent increase in the real estate tax rate every other year over six years.
Five council members, including Mayor Brenda S. Pelham, said they would support Daley's proposal. The council could finalize the funding plan June 9.
