White House posts details of Obama’s school speech on Web
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama plans to tell the nation's school children that they ultimately are most responsible for their own education.
The White House posted Obama's remarks, scheduled for tomorrow, in advance on its Web site.
Obama's planned talk has been controversial, with several conservative organizations and individuals accusing him of trying to delve too directly into local education. But White House officials, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, have said the charges are silly.
In the remarks set for tomorrow, Obama tells young people that all the work of parents, educators and others won't matter "unless you show up for those schools, pay attention to those teaches."
In the Richmond region, several school districts, including Chesterfield and Hanover counties, said they do not plan to show the speech when it airs at 1 p.m.

While this message is certainly admirable, I can see how some people were worried that the content of his speech might go into other areas.. like his push for health care etc..
I actually wouldn’t be surprised if this whole flap wasn’t somehow used as a way to paint conservatives as “wackos” and then come out with this nice vanilla speech that certainly wouldn’t offend a fly. Given the strong opposition to many of the president’s policies.. it would certainly be a pretty safe bet that this type of reaction might follow. I certainly talk to my kids about current events.. and am not particularly threatened by them hearing different views. I wouldn’t have been happy if the president used this opportunity to talk about health care.. but now that is not the case.. so I say fine.. let the kids hear him.
This reaction is no different than the liberal knee jerk reactions to everything that came out of George Bush’s mouth. Not saying that’s right.. but we seem to have a lot of pots out there calling the kettle.. oh never mind.. that would be misconstrued.
Bush was not the end all be all good or evil man.. Obama isn’t either.. but I do personally have concerns about the direction of his policies and the people that he has appointed. They aren’t reflective of my own ideas and beliefs. I think a lot of people voted for him.. not for him, but “against” Bush. I want this country to succeed.. I guess I just have different ideas about how that can be accomplished. I do want to know his ideas though.. so that I can figure out where there may be commmon ground or room for compromise.. because we aren’t going to get anything accomplished with everyone sitting at the polar ends of the equation.
12step - School districts pulled the plug on this due to Obama imposing himself on schools during what is the first day of school for many districts. They didn’t need the distraction on day one.
I want my kid learning the truth. Not the nonsense folks like you and Obama want to feed them.
What is all this fuss about? The President’s speech? Wish you guys would have held the Bush administration half as accountable as you are trying to make this present administration! Give President Obama a chance. He inherited this mess from the previous administration, and the one before that, and the one before that, and the list goes on! This petty mess has got to stop. Each time I read comments coming from a so-called “conservative group” it makes me sit on the edge of my seat waiting to vote “Democrat”. Why? Because I can!
I have to agree with 12steprevenge’s comments about keeping SG’s kids out of school….or shall I say, out of life. After talking with several people and listening to countless news feeds on the topic of Obama’s talk with kids, that it seems to be those parents who don’t know as much about government as their 5th graders that are raising all the halabaloo. Read, listen, and educate yourselves before jumping onto someone’s hate bandwagon!
Hey clhume,
Just wanted to clarify a couple things for you. Yes, there are millions of people who pay for school voluntarily, without being “forced” to through taxes, etc. It’s called private school. And the truth is, most of us are HAPPY to pay for education through taxes, etc. but don’t like money being thrown out the window and then being “asked” (forced) to pay even more. In Henrico County, the school system costs over $8,500 per pupil per year, and that’s not even including transportation (school buses) or the buildings themselves! With a 30-student classroom, that’s over a quarter-million dollars a year just for that one classroom. Take the teacher salary out fo that, and you STILL have WELL over $175,000 left. For what? And then, we just paid $112 in fees for our middle-schooler! What is all of our tax money going for? It is clear that getting more money isn’t the problem. The problem is spending the money we already use more wisely. And this is the rub for the speech - HE is the only one working to fix up the classrooms? Why doesn’t he continue the previous theme and say “we” instead of “I”?
SG- You’d better keep your kid out for the rest of the year, then. Probably best not to let him leave home at all. There are good odds he might get exposed to all kinds of frightening ideas or receive a pep talk from someone without your expressed permission and pre-affirmed approval!
Beware, though! One day he might read the paper or maybe a magazine or an online periodical and *bam*, there he is, being exposed to words from all types of people without your prior review. It’s a big, scary world out there with all kinds of ideas and statements and speeches floating around.
Good luck with that.
Don’t forget - This speech has been revised from it’s original form. I’m glad Hanover County decided to drop it.
By the way - Van Jones quit! Of course Obama and his administration knew nothing of Jones comments. Just like Wright and all the other low-lifes Obama has surrounded himself with. Jones wouldn’t know a green job if it bit him in the @@@.
I don’t want Obama saying anything to my kid unless I review it first. I would have kept him out of school tomorrow if Hanover hadn’t changed the policy.
Obama’s remarks about working hard to get the money for computers, supplies, etc. is a figure of speech/and true. No one voluntarily gives money for education unless a tax or mandate is made, not even those who have kids in public schools. Everyone wants better schools, better teachers, better equipment, but it’s always the same…NOT OUT OF MY POCKET. As a teacher I see this all the time. I teach in a inner-city school with 98% students on free lunch program….we have to fight tooth and nail to get things that are somewhat up to date. If you want schools and students to succeed, FUND EDUCATION! And my students will be watching President Obama tomorrow!
Hey, 12steprevenge, I don’t have kids but, based on the text of the speech released, I’d have no problems having them hear it delivered by the president.. I really took issue with the Dept of Education “suggested” planned activities as originally published (and since corrected after they admitted it was out of line) and the line I put up in my prior post got under my skin because it makes it seem that the president is personally saying he’s doing those things, not congress and the president working together with Other than that, a nice kick off to the school year.
FP- You’re trying too hard to find something to dig at. Would you opt your child out of hearing that message because of that line?
