Petersburg schools fall short

In a year in which a record 95 percent of Virginia's public schools achieved full accreditation, Petersburg City Public Schools took a step backward. Only one of its schools achieved full accreditation this year, compared with two last year. Among the results:

  • Five of Petersburg's seven schools were denied accreditation for the current school year based on low student achievement on last year's Standards of Learning tests.
  • Walnut Hill Elementary School was accredited with warning in English after being fully accredited last year.
  • Robert E. Lee Elementary School attained full accreditation for the second straight year.

The Virginia Board of Education first placed Petersburg's school system on division-level review in 2004. The state board requested yesterday that Petersburg move forward with a plan to provide an independently managed middle school program for the 2009-10 school year as well as report quarterly to the state board with data on student achievement and teacher quality.
