In the coming weeks, area schools in partnership with regional health departments will be offering free school-based H1N1 flu-vaccination clinics to protect students against the virus that has been blamed for several deaths in Virginia.

"The number of cases is increasing," said Dr. William R. Nelson, director of the Chesterfield County Health District. "It's clear that we're in a significant outbreak."

The flu activity continues to increase across the United States, with 37 states, including Virginia, reporting widespread activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Eight deaths in Virginia have been attributed to the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu. Nationally, the CDC is reporting more than 900 flu-related deaths. In comparison, seasonal flu kills an estimated 36,000 people annually.

Nelson said it is important to vaccinate students to reduce the number of school absences. His department staff will work with the school districts of Henrico, Chesterfield and Powhatan counties and the city of Colonial Heights to administer free H1N1 vaccines at each school, he said. The vaccinations begin Monday at the elementary level in Chesterfield and Oct. 26 in Henrico. He said he wasn't sure when they will start in Colonial Heights and Powhatan.

"How many schools we do each day will depend on the vaccine supply," Nelson said.

The vaccine is available for about half of the students, and demand for the voluntary vaccination won't be known until administration starts, Nelson said. But if more vaccine is needed, his department can obtain it, he said.

Henrico schools notified parents by phone message Tuesday night with information on the free flu-shot clinics. Parents were advised to complete a consent form and return it by tomorrow if they want their children to be vaccinated. The child's health history information will determine whether the flu mist or flu shot will be administered, parents were told. A student will not receive the vaccine if a nurse is unable to contact a parent to clarify a response.

Henrico schools are seeing an increase in absenteeism and clinic visits of students and staff with flulike symptoms.

Chesterfield schools spokesman Shawn Smith said letters with information on the vaccine clinics were going out yesterday and today to parents with children in elementary school. Consent forms will be available at the schools, he said. The clinics for the middle and high schools have not been scheduled. Consent forms for those parents will be included in the letters, he said.

Richmond will start vaccine clinics at the elementary school level Monday. Hanover County schools will be offering school-based vaccine clinics, but details and schedules were still being worked out, spokeswoman Dale Theakston said.

Regional health directors encouraged parents to take advantage of the free H1N1 vaccine being offered in schools and to complete the consent forms.

"The most recent vaccine shipment received will allow us to protect the health of our children and young adults, who are among the groups most at risk," Kay Rankin, the director of the Crater Health District, which covers the Tri-Cities area, said a written statement. "They are the ones who tend to be in close contact at school and the workplace."

Nelson said the nasal and injected H1N1 vaccine are similar to ordinary flu shots.

"They're both safe vaccines," he said.

Battle Lines Drawn Over Mercury in Shots
States push for bans in children’s vaccines but leading medical groups are pushing back
by Myron Levin, Times Staff Writer
April 10, 2006

As lawmakers in about 20 states press for bans on mercury in children’s vaccines, they are meeting stiff resistance from influential health and medical organizations, including groups that get substantial funding from drug makers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seven states have adopted the anti-mercury bills - California being one of the first. California’s law, passed in 2004 and to take effect July 1, will prohibit shots with more than a trace of thimerosal for pregnant women and children younger than 3. In recent weeks, similar bills have been defeated in at least five states.

The push for legislation comes long after the uproar over continued use of thimerosal, a mercury-based antibacterial agent, appeared to subside in 1999, when manufacturers began phasing it out of routine pediatric vaccines. But the controversy flared anew when flu shots containing thimerosal were added to the childhood immunization schedule in 2004 and the CDC refused to recommend thimerosal-free shots for infants and pregnant women. Angered by the CDC’s refusal - and fearing a backslide into more thimerosal use - state lawmakers and anti-mercury advocates began pushing for outright thimerosal bans.

I spoke to a well… very well know local pharmacy… and they are not giving the shot to their children.
Fact one… the regular flu shot that both of my children received did NOT have mercury.

Fact Two:  The flu shot given was a dead form of the flu.

Fact Three:  It was processed using the same basic fundamentals and testing developed years ago…. and been tested using a dead form of the flu.

This flu shot is a live one!!!
Fact: It does or some of the shots will have mercury!!!!

Fact:  It has not been tested using the same methods because this virus is live…not a dead form of the virus.

Fact: ONLY ONE company is producing the shots in the UNITED STATES.

The other 4 are overseas!! What quality control do they have… and what LEGAL rights do you have if the shots should be defective?

What are other countries doing??? Are they doing the same?? as we are?

I believe my local pharmacist and NOT WASHINGTON.

To the other parents…. WHAT IF THE SHOTS CAUSE A WORSE PROBLEM?

I’m glad to know that Chesterfield is doing the same thing.  My daughter will definitely be receiving this vaccine.  I was planning on having her get it from her DR as soon as it was available, but this way makes it so much easier.  I work at a hospital so I received my vaccination for it already this week.  I am still however shocked at the people who have little or no knowledge of these vaccinations.  I work with a lady who refuses to get them bc she says she doesn’t want to get sick by them.  She is still one of those people that thinks she will get the flu if she gets the shot!  Oh well, atleast I feel a little safer now, and once my daughter receives it, that will be another sigh of relief.

Just one more piece of proof that there is no mommy test - the young mother who told the TV reporter that she would probably wait because her son didn’t have any symptoms.

Health officials need to shout from the rooftops that the vaccinations aren’t effective for two weeks.  It takes that long for the body to create enough antibodies to prevent infection.

If school children (and mommies) think the shot is effective immediately, the pandemic will get worse now that the vaccine is available.
