VUU plans fitness center, AC in Newman Hall rooms

Virginia Union University students will have access to a new fitness center when they return to campus in the fall. And students living in Newman Hall can look forward to air-conditioned dorm rooms.

Those are among $1.8 million in expenditures approved Saturday by VUU's board of trustees. The board agreed to spend $450,000 for additional faculty members and for personnel in student affairs and the library.

The plan also includes $1 million in building improvements, including air-conditioning Newman Hall for the first time. Newman, built in 1959, houses 97 female students. The dorm is one of six residence halls on campus.

The new fitness center will be in the Belgian Building, said Vanessa Moody Coombs, vice president for university relations. She said it will use fitness equipment already owned by the athletic department but currently not accessible to all students.

The board also approved plans to spend about $130,000 for assessment software and equipment to maintain student files. New instruments for a student jazz ensemble/pep band were among other expenditures. -- Karin Kapsidelis

Why can’t this school find funds to elimiate the blighted old hospital building it owns on Overbrook Road? This building has been boarded-up for over 10 years now! Trees grow out of the bricks, weeds constantly grow more than a foot high in the summer, trash accumulates and it is a constant drag on the residences that face this blight. The city should condemn this property and tear it down! Virginia Union University should be ashamed of the way they manage their properties.
