3 die in separate crashes in Va.
A Floyd County woman died Sunday after she lost control of her car and flipped twice on state Route 653 in Floyd County, state police said.
Ashley Renee Chaffin, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:05 a.m. wreck about a half-mile north of state Route 660. Police said Chaffin was driving north when her car slid off the road in a curve, veered over an embankment and flipped twice, landing on its roof. Police said she wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Also on Sunday, Harry E. Powers, 47, of Swoope died at 2:30 p.m. at University of Virginia Medical Center from injuries he suffered a day earlier on state Route 742 in Augusta County. Police said Powers was traveling south when the motorcycle he was riding struck two deer, causing him to lose control about one-tenth of a mile north of state Route 728
In a Saturday crash, James M. Barnes, 20, of Colonial Beach was killed when the minivan in which he was riding ran off the road, causing the rear of the vehicle to strike a tree on state Route 202 in Westmoreland County. He died at the scene at about 9:22 p.m., one-tenth of a mile north of state Route 203, police said. Police said he wasn't wearing a safety belt.
The fatalities raised Virginia's highway death toll to 215, compared with 274 as of the same date last year.
