SW Va. wrecks are fatal to two

A 2-year-old passenger died yesterday in a Tennessee hospital after he was involved in a two-car collision Saturday in Southwest Virginia.

Virginia State Police said Mathew Harris Bogle of Tazewell was in a child-restraint seat when the vehicle he was riding in was hit from behind at a stoplight on U.S. 460 at Clay Drive in Tazewell County about 6:30 p.m.

A 58-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Bluefield on Friday, state police said.

Deborah Cooke of Bluefield was driving a minivan westbound on Hicks Street at the intersection with Tazewell Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned at 8:35 p.m.

Cooke, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

The deaths brought the number of highway fatalities in Virginia this year to 112, compared with 170 last year at this time.
