Two die in U.S. 29 crash in Nelson

Two people from Bloomfield, Conn., were killed in a single-vehicle crash in Nelson County on Sunday, Virginia State Police said.

Henry A. Smith, 73, and his passenger, Avis M. Smith, 43, died in the crash on U.S. 29 just south of the Albemarle County line, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

The crash happened at about 11 a.m. when the car ran off the left side of northbound U.S. 29, drove across the median and into the southbound lane, Geller said. The car struck an embankment, overturned and landed in a culvert. The driver and the passenger died at the scene, police said.
